Ever since Gen2, I always picked the girl as my character, even if I'm a man.
Why?
Most of them are cute and sexy as hell.
It's fun to see a girl be a badass hero.

As for me (OP) my favorite main pokegirl is Serena from X/Y. No, not her official/default look. MY Serena renamed Natasha. When all the clothing and hair/lenses have been unlocked and bought, you can make the character truly your own. So, Natasha is the BEST pokegirl ever.
Also, that ass when she make the "roller skate shuffle" in the main streets of Illumnis.

I personally usually pick the male character because if I don't I get stuck at the name selection. Since I like using the same name all the time and it's a male name, it's a weird kind of feel.
I used female character in some spin offs, though, like pokemon ranger. The girl in Guardian Signs was cute as hell.

Played as May in Sapphire because I hadn't played a Pokémon with gender selection before (Having played red yellow gold, but not Crystal).

Played as Leaf in LG because Gen 1 with a girl was new.

Played as Dawn in Pearl 'cause Lucas looks like shit.

Played as Whatsherface in SS 'cause Gen 2 with a girl was new to me.

What's your point? Her default name in FR/LG is Blue, Rival's is Green and Heroe's is Red. It was changed in HG/SS when Rival was again named Blue, so her name should be Green then.

Why "Leaf" is popular is just due to bulbapedos forcing and we have pomf and his shitty pedia here.

Mein African American brother. I always play as the girl, and the reason is simple: I think all the male protagonists look like shit. They're always some kind of ugly hipsters or whatever and I don't want my player character to look like that. The girl protagonists always have 10/10 designs except Lyra, who is by far the worst girl so I play with them. I really don't understand the argument that I should be playing as the guy because I'm a guy. What does that have to do with anything? I'm not trying to create a copy of myself in the games. If you always play with a character of your gender and name it after yourself, that's fine, but that's not how I play.

Also, the Pokegirls are insanely hot and I always get a boner when I dress up my player character in X.

But besides that I don´t need any male character to project my own gender on. This is also why I refuse to play GTA5. That is her in game name. Red, Green, and Blue, that's how Kanto Heroes are called.

"Leaf" exists in fandom only thanks to bulbapedia forcing it. Everyone refered to her as Blue or Green before.

Only played gen 1 and pre-Crystal Gen 2 so I had to be a male. The biggest reason I got back into Pokémon was that I heard that you would be able to customize your pokégirl in Y and I was quite satisfied. Bought Soul Silver and played the girl there too, looking forward to play the other games as a girl too.

Hue and Nate look too damn similar to exist in the same universe, and the lack of a female counterpart to him just makes Rosa look ridiculously canon.
