I'm about 5 hours into Pokemon Y. I've played every main series game except B2/W2 Ever since Pokemon Stadium, I always yearned for a fully 3D Pokemon adventure; one that isn't confined to grid movement, one with 3D modeled Pokemon, maybe on a console such as Gamecube. But it never came. Until now. And now I'm not sure it's what I want. I played Black immediately before I started Y (so I could poketransfer my whole game into 3D), and it really reinvigorated my love for the series. I loved seeing new Pokemon again and catching them like the old days. I finished the Elite 4, caught Kyurem, poketransfered everything, skipped the postgame, and began playing Y. Now I think I might just go back and finish Black. Y is...just not what I was expecting. Or maybe it is and I wasn't expecting to find that it isn't what I want. I love the 2D art for all the pokemon, and nothing makes me want to catch them all more than collecting all their sprites. I've found that in Y I don't really want to catch any pokemon, and I really only do it to complete my team. Nothing jumps out at me as a cool Pokemon, or cool artwork. I know I must be crazy, but does anyone else feel this way? Will I get used to it, or do others miss the 2D sprites as well...? tl;dr I thought I wanted a 3D Pokemon game but now that I have it, I'm not sure it's as good as 2D

It sounds like you just shot your wad OP. Take some time away from pokemon for a while, then when something draws you back in see how you feel then.

So, you wanted a 3D Pokemon game without grid movement on the GameCube but it never came? I didnt know Colosseum had grid movement.

>>18321643 I wanted a 3D Pokemon game proper. Admittedly I never played it, but I don't think Colosseum had a world your character walked around in and faced random battles. Pokemon XD came closest I think, but i never played that either.

Just wait. It was nevet going to be the definitive 3D Pokemon game, being the first one. Next gen will improve on it. Until then, X/Y are solid games and a glimpse oc what's to come

>>18321660 Colosseum and XD didn't have random battles. XD had 9 wild Pokemon, but they were in specific areas and required setting bait and doing other things until they showed up.
They were the best games in the franchise imo, and I think people should try them before they judge them.

>>18321660 I personally think Colosseum and XD were better than Y. I thought the Shadow Pokemon gimmick was really interesting and limited your choices of what to catch, promoting the use of mons you wouldn't normally use, and the world design was so kooky and charming.
>>18321734 This guy has it right. I'd want another Shadow Pokemon game over R/S/E remakes, hell.

>>18321518 Im the opposite, I was fully appalled by the decision gamefreak made to stray away from 2D sprites.
I've never felt so wrong but I will still miss the sprites

Really love Black/White 1/2? Play Blaze black/Volt white 1/2! A lot more challenging + type changes. (Some that I remember, Samurott = Water/Fight, Emboar(in the first one) = Fire Ground, Serperior = Grass/Dragon

I would have loved XY's aesthetics if the the models got rid of the black outline like in pic related.

>>18321518 i really dislike the 3D, but because it's the NEW SUPER 3D TECHNOLOGY gf had to shove it into the game.

>>18321793 Would have been nice. I think they added those outlines to increase the visibility. They're doing something similar with the 3DS version of Smash4.

What I miss is the overworld. It looked great in HG/SS and it well, worked. I've gotten used to Gen 6's "3D" overworld but it still feels a little off. The buildings outside of Lumiose all look stupid and out of proportion.

>>18321809 are you talking about 3D models, or the 3D effect? Because the models aren't bad, but the effect is atrocious. A complete afterthought.

>>18321734 >>18321751 The two Orre games also had a much better scale than XY do. When you had a Wailord it was titanic.

who cares the main gameplay will still be turn based

Bloody hell, you weren't joking. Never seen that before.

The only thing I don't like about XD and Colo are "flying" swimming Pokémon (how was this handled in X and Y?). They should be more like Magikarp's Sprite in HG/SS, ie jumping without water.

>>18321734 >They were the best games in the franchise imo oh my god, all this time I thought I was alone. I don't like XD because it felt like it was trying to make a half-hearted compromise between Colosseum and the main series, but Colosseum has fonder memories for me than any other Pokemon game.

>>18321964 That's always been the way it's handled. The sprites and models just "float" there if they're a swimming Pokemon, Magikarp is the only one who gets the flopping treatment (to emphasize its uselessness)

>>18321964 That's something more about Magikarp itself. Magikarp is just that much of a fail Pokemon. Swimming Pokemon being shown as flying has happened since the games (notice how the sprites seem to portray them in a swimming motion), Stadium 1, Stadium 2, Colosseum, XD, and XY.

>>18321791 I'm not really into rom hacks. Maybe I'll check it out. Mostly I don't like to remember types that will be different in any other pokemon game I play, and the story is always garbage.

Aside from the pokemon models and clouds, everything in the overworld looks plastic.

>>18322023 Blaze Black and Volt White, and all of the creator's similar hacks, don't change the story at all. They're just mechanics changes that allow you to catch all pokemon, increase the difficulty, and change pokemon's level ups and stats.
They're the only hacks I can actually stand playing.

Trading spritework for low-end 3D always produces an awkward transition period. I like seeing what the Pokémon look like in 3D but the novelty is lessened because the artstyle is being followed so closely it's not hard to imagine what the 3D models will look like based on the sprite-work. The best bit is seeing the Pokémon fully and realistically animated.

>>18321734 I didn't like Colosseum because most of the pokemon were from Gen 2, and at the time I liked Gen 3 pokemon a whole lot better. As a result I never got XD.
>>18321874 >>18321824 Scale is probably the one thing that's making the models not be fucking amazing in my eyes. I remember back in the Stadium days when the camera would zoom out and tiny little Diglet fighting Gyarados and you could feel just how big or small they were in comparison to each other.
