Alright, here I go.
So, I'm looking to get into competitive battling, but I have absolutely no idea where I should begin.
I recently picked up Pokémon Y and it's my first one since Gen II, so I've forgotten what little I knew about Pokémon back then. Considering I'm on a Pokémon related board, I figure you guys are pretty knowledgeable about the games.
I know there's a shitload of things I have to know beforehand, but I'd like some basic info to get me started.

Aaalright, competitive battling. To get started, google about EVs, IVs and natures. If you still have doubts, ask us. This is the most basic thing you should know as stats must be optimized.

1) look up and learn about:
EVs
IVs
Natures

2) get some experience- play on Pokemon Showdown, or play with your friends on cartridge

3) learn while you play

4) go to websites like Smogon for comprehensive and useful analyses of individual pokemon

That's the best thing you can do

Learn about IVs and EVs. They are the most important part of the metagame.

Then get yourself a 6IV ditto to breed your favorites or just to get competitive pokemon. Also breed for the ideal nature of that specific pokemon. I'm sure someone on this board has a spare.

Then pick up the macho brace (on that route with the empty hotel) and learn how to EV train using hoards, and pokerus.

It might sound tough but once you get the hang of it it's very easy.

Alrighty, thanks a lot!
At a first glance, IVs and EVs seem kind of difficult to understand, but I figure I'll get a grasp of them as I continue reading about them.
I will also have to plan my team at some point, but I think I have to study the basics first

I can try to summarize them a little bit right now:

EVs - like experience for each stat. You can have up to 252 in each stat, but in total you can only really have 510 EVs on your pokemon. Every 4 EVs a stat has, means that stat will have 1 extra point at level 100 - for example, a level 100 pokemon with 20 EVs in HP will have 5 more HP than a pokemon without these EVs.

IVs - like the pokemon's 'genes'. Each can go up to 31, and every IV means one point in the stat at level 100 - for example, a level 100 with a 31 speed IV has 31 more speed than one with a 0 speed IV.

It's fairly simple and you'll definitely get a grasp on it as you work with them.

There's a judge in Kiloude city pokemon center which will tell you if you have any 31 IVs, and you can calculate the rest on Serebii.net.

I recommend using the 'marking' function in the PC to mark your pokemon according to their max IVs. There's 6 stats and 6 possible markings, so it's very useful.

I see.
So in order to make, for example, a hard-hitting pokemon that uses physical attacks, I would have to kill Pokémon that improve my Attack stat coupled with ideal IVs and Nature?

Exactly.
There are items you can get from the Battle Maison to increase the rate at which you gain individual EVs, I recommend you get all of them because it will speed things up significantly.

Oh, and the fastest method is:

>get your pokemon
>get something that knows Sweet Scent, and something that has a move that can hit a whole group of pokemon (Dazzling Gleam and similar)
>get another pokemon which has Pokerus (this increases EV gain)

>use sweet scent in an area with the right hordes (route 14 is the best place for just Attack, for example)
>kill the horde
>get EVs

Before worrying about EVs, I'd have to breed an ideal mon first.
Okay, thanks a lot! This should be enough to get me started on making my competitive team. It's gonna take a while, but you've got to start somewhere

***typing no longer defines whether a move is physical or special. instead of rock type moves being purely physical, you can get rock type moves that hit special defense and use your special attack, such as Power Gem. when you check your moves in-game, special is denoted by a blue box with circles and physical moves have a red box with yellow explosions.
***Always focus on your pokemons advantages. if you have something slow, like Forretress, don't train it in Speed or give it a speed positive nature. you can tell what's positive by looking at the stats: whatever's pink is positive, whatever's blue is negative. don't lower a defense stat unless you're running a mixed attacker, don't lower speed unless you run gyro ball or use aegislash.
