Due to the way it works, the stream ended up wandering into the items menu a LOT. Most of the items ended up discarded, so the stream ended up accidentally trying to USE the Helix fossil over and over.

gen 1 AI tries to pick the move that's super effective against your pokemon.

Unfortunately, it only looks at the type and not what the move actually does.

Venomoth basically was free to do whatever the fuck it wanted to a dragonite because it knew Barrier (a psychic move) and that was the only move that dragonite would pick (due to the shitty AI)

Strong trainers like the E4 use supereffective move typings. Since Venemoth is part Poison, Dragonite spammed it's Psychic moves, which weren't damage dealing moves (it's barrier and something). Venemoth just poisoned it and waited.
