Another thing I did, was as soon as I got a decent pokemon (like shellder, 1or2 IVs) I would breed it up to the appropriate 5ivs for myself and then pawn off all the 4ivd babies and so on.
Not only is it cool to have good pokemon like that, it gets some slightly underused pokemon out there. Plus once you start building you're repertoire, breeding becomes easy as hell (never once used the "start from scratch with a ditto, and power items" thing). Seriously, with egg groups, tons of potential larents, I can usually go from a 0 IV'd pokemon to 5iv's in the span of an hour or so.
And all the while you get tons of pokemon to send out there. Don't be that guy who sends a bunnelby even though the other person can check and know it wasn't you. Passing on shit still means you're passing on shit
