He's from Unova, but the people from Kanto are too stupid to tell the difference between the two, so the nickname stuck because they thought it was a real country in the Poke-World.

Well, it's canon that real life locations are a part of the Pokemon world, so I think America is a safe bet. Russia for example is referenced in Silph Co, and Mew was originally found in the jungles of South America.
Also, Kanto is straight up IRL Kanto except for the town names.

My head canon is that the names of the real places on which the games are based are just alternate names which are used interchangeably, though maybe less frequently than in real life. Like Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, and Hoenn are in "Japan". Unova is in "America", and Kalos is vaguely french, so it's probably in "France". It solves a lot of problems with Pokedex entries, and also now that we have global online multiplayer since Gen IV, and they have real-world maps and location names in-game on Wi-Fi sand everything. NPCs are also starting to use real-world fore ugh languages more often each game. I suppose the conceit is that it's our world, but with Pokemon and renamed regions.

Actually, in real life, places have more than one name depending on what language is being spoken. Spain is not Spain in their own language. It's España. In French, it's Espagne. Of course, I'm not sure if the context for a different language exists since all the regions retain their names across gens. If it did, we would've heard them referred to as something different once we entered Unova. (If all of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh sourced from the same culture) It's also possible that all region names are retained regardless of language in the pokeworld.

Ah, who am I kidding, nothing in this thing is consistent at all. They just didn't know that they would actually be basing a region off America and attempted to retcon that.

If you look at the pokemon card that he is on the map in the back is actually a slightly altered Ukraine. With red arrows coming from the east, so Lt Surge fights in the upcoming 3rd World War when Russia invades the Ukraine.

On a side note, it is NOT meant to be Ground Zero. If it were, the ruins would be on the southwest end of Castelia City, not covering a vast area going north into Times Square.

I wouldn't say its WW3, but that is arrows from the right coming to what I think is Biyaostok, and it presumably was a big enough conflict that all his gym buddies are fellow guys from "the war"

I originally thought it was Vladivostok, and he was part of an amphibious landing from Japan to liberate Chinese occupied Siberia/Korea, hence where he picked up Raichu

They can't keep it straight also what he did. Either he was infantry, or he was Air Force (one of the guys said he used electric Pokemon to power his plane)

The map in the background clearly shows Central Europe. It says “WARSCHAU” in big red letters, which is the German name for the Polish capital of Warsaw; and north of it you can see the Baltic coastline of former Prussia, with the Sambia peninsula jutting out.
The map also correctly labels the river Bug.

In fact, the map looks like there was a war between a greater German empire and Russia, with a Polish rump state caught in the middle.

It's just based on Arizona, it isn't for-sure America.
Would be neat if the next console game took place in the midwest and connected Unova and Orre on opposite sides, though. Doesn't necessarily have to look like the US at the end but some acknowledgement would be neat.

What you know man? I have 300 km to war. And IMO he's doing what is right. It's obvious this whole 'invasion' was planed months ago.
