So I want to try at least one of these. From what I understand neither of them are that great but I just have this weird craving for at the moment. Which one of them should it be though? Will probably only be playing the story and transferring MNs to any of the GBA games ain't happening so that's irrelevant.

XD is a better game, though it is a sequel to Colosseum so you'll miss out on some references to the original's story.

If you're only gonna play one, though, definitely do XD.

XD is a longer game with more areas and features. Since it's a sequel, it's obviously more polished, too. It has a more diverse Pokemon availability; Colosseum focused on Johto Pokemon so Gen3 GBA players could fill out their Dex, but XD has a bit of everything.

Colosseum starters start at higher levels simply because Colosseum is a shorter game. Both games work up to the mid-fifties level for their final bosses. I'm actually partway through a Colosseum replay myself and it's almost over already.

Really you could just play both games if you aren't sure. I still like Colosseum for being a bit more "badass", at least for a Pokemon game; it's the only Pokemon RPG where you play as a non-kid ex-criminal.

Just play them both in order, OP.

They are both really good, terribly underrated games.
XD definitely has a little bit more going for it, but you'll get the most out of the series as a whole by playing Colo first and seeing the whole story from the beginning.

I'd like to see a new sequel on Wii U, actually. I thought the console RPGs were very unique and fun. It's a shame they chose to ditch the RPG aspect and make the exceedingly mediocre Battle Revolution on Wii.

That or a new Stadium-style game. Holy fuck, the Stadiums were so simple and yet so good. Very nice extensions of the handheld games, and the mini-games remain legendary. (Me and my pals sometimes boot up Stadium 2 just for the quiz mode.)

Colosseum has more stand-out tunes and the story is a lot darker, but XD has a better variety of useful pokemon, a longer main storyline and nicer graphics in my opinion.

The pokeball glitch in Colosseum is definitely a favourite..

Both are worth playing, I'd play Colosseum first because the improvements in XD will make it hard to go back to.

Colosseum has a better atmosphere than XD, imo, but XD's mechanical improvements largely outweigh that.

PLEASE. I saw someone managed to use an AR code to change someone's Shadow Pokémon into a Latias, maybe someone could write a way to change everyone's Shadow Pokémon into a different random Pokémon? A quick RNG call could determine which mon a given trainer gets.

this has promise, but the code is formatted as "trainer's first Pokémon", so EVERY trainer he fights will have a Shadow Latios. In the first slot of their party, no less, leading to most trainers having their actual shadow Pokémon in addition to the modified one. Is there a way to change this code so it effects a given trainer? Because if so we could just find a list of each trainer ID in the game, determine which one has Shadow Pokémon, and find what that Pokémon's party position is, then use an RNG call to apply random numbers from 1 to 386 (converted to hex) in the "pokemon" slot.

Update on this, with searching there doesn't seem to be a code out there that edits a Trainer's Pokémon in Colosseum except the one in that Youtube video, which just gives every trainer the same shadow Pokémon in the same slot.

Loved XD, being around 10 when I got it and the main character sharing my name I just loved it.
I also much prefer the 'scouter' being used to sense Shadow Pokemon instead of getting that girl to look at it. (Unlike most Pokegirls she wasn't cute at all either.)

Colosseum has the superior, albeit silent protagonist, has a better backstory and relevance to his dealing with the shadow pokemon and organizations in-game.

The fact is, XD lets you have more fun devising a team, Colosseum's entire list of available pokemon basically spell out as clear as day that the game was there to complete Johto pokedex entries on Fire Red/Leaf Green

It's quite solid. The extra chance to inflict status with it is incredibly helpful, but it's not worth relying on. It was much better last gen when Togekiss got STAB from it.
Helping Hand Togetic, however, is still a major pain in the ass in doubles with an Eviolite.

I'm personally more fond of Colloseum, but that's really only because I've never actually owned a copy of XD myself. Only borrowed my friend's copy for like, a week. XD definitely gives you the wider choice of Pokémon and I've generally heard it's better than Colosseum. Just go with whatever is cheaper I guess?

Also you just gotta love Miror B's samba music from the first game

Colosseum Pros:

The Johto starters were available in XD if you beat Mt. Battle, so essentially postgame. It also had a significantly wider range of pokemon, and the Shadow Pokemon mechanic was much more developed (they hade more than one move and there were more things to do concerning shadow pokemon)

You forgot the biggest change.

The Shadow Pokemon mechanics. In XD there were a ton of shadow moves, compared to Colosseum's one, and they were super effective against non-shadow pokemon.
