Good thing I didn't ask about the parents at all then. I was wondering if region was set on pokemon generation, or hatching.

The posts here are a little confusing, the pattern is determined by which region the egg is produced in. So if your friend has a different pattern than you, and trades you an egg, it'll hatch as your friend's pattern rather than your own.

Parents' patterns never matter.

Ever since some recent update, changing regions wipes youre entire chunk of downloaded content, and your nintendo ID.
I keep my second DS completely offline. No ID, no downloads, no bank. Nothing to lose.

That's neat.

Of course, once the game recognizes whatever location you're set to, the game is married to that location. Changing the 3DS location will not change XY's registered location.

Do you plan to restart the game every time you want to breed a different Vivillon? That sounds quite cumbersome.

You wouldn't have stuff like Bank on your 2nd 3DS anyway, unless you're wanting two separate accounts. Your Nintendo ID can only be linked to one 3DS.
