Silver is hilarious. He reminds me of my best friend growing up as a kid. Granted I had a shitty choice of friends, but still it was so neat to see their views and figure out why they are wrong.
Other than that, I remember being excited about Day and Night Pokemon hunting, breeding, and hearing about Joey and his Pokemon.

I barely remember when I played Crystal so most of my Gen II memories are actually from HG. Anyway I liked how beating the Elite 4 just opened up an entirely new area for you, that was pretty cool. I wish they'd done that in the other games as well.

The Johto Gym Leaders were fairly memorable too. And those Apicorn balls... why they only kept those Johto exclusive is beyond me.

I loved the graphics, because I'm a sucker for pixel art, and the color palette for GSC was really great. RBY was boring to look at, but GSC is so vibrant and saturated, I love it.

The music was great too, and the post game is really the best in the series, considering it opens up a whole new region. Silver was a fun rival and I enjoyed stomping his ass all the time. The introduction of breeding was cool and I leveled up my first 'mon to level 100 in gen 2.

Yeah, some of what I'm saying is definitely nostalgia fueled, but it really felt like a solid, polished game for the game boy color era, and was a huge step up compared to gen 1. I still like playing it now and again on emulators today.

Oh boy, a generation 2 thread? count me in boy. I always loved gen 2, but the more time passes the more I appreciate it. I always chuckle when I remember how the Pokemon Communication Center (Pokemon Crystal Jap) was some sort of early wifi, and the Pokegear acted as a some sort of in-game modern smartphone. In the Japanese version of Crystal you could even save real contacts in your game. Pretty awesome and innovative.

It started in FireRed and LeafGreen when some NPC in the post-game rocket base asks if you're Giovanni's kid and then corrects himself because Giovanni's son has red hair, a pretty obvious reference to Silver.

GSC is still one of my favorites and I still play it today. I have workings copies of Gold, Silver and Crystal with new batteries.

I speedrun Crystal from time to time, with my best time being 3:38, obviously there is a lot of room for improvement considering the record is 3:22.

HG/SS are very good remakes too. They did the series justice.

What are some things you miss from HG SS that were axed from GSC?

Personally, I miss how they didn't kept the different theme songs for Day and Night, and the different tiles between Johto and Kanto. I absolutely love all the little details GSC have and I feel like HG SS couldn't keep that charm.

Don't get me wrong though. HG SS are master pieces (like the originals).

What I mostly don't like about HeartGold is the split Spe/Physical attacks in gen 4 introduced. I realized I find the abilities really annoying making grinding longer for some Pokemon in HeartGold. The main problem is the low leveled Pokemon Trainers in both Kanto and Johto in the original Gold/Silver.

wut. That's one of the best things to happen in the series.

My biggest gripes about HG/SS were the new music, the crappy Rocket plot (if you're going to add new content, don't half ass it; there were only three segments with the Rockets like the original games, and the admins get no personality at all), and how they didn't fix the level scaling at all. At least they improved the pre-E4 dex, but still.

Also, it was a shame they didn't give you the GB sound player until the postgame. If you had it at the start, that would have been great.

I think the level scaling in Johto in the GBC games is kind of justified since after Ecruteak you have the choice to go to Olivine or Mahogany, but in the NDS games they could've just programmed that if you have certain number of badges, the levels of the Pokemon and trainers in the opposite route would increase. In fact, you CAN do that in the GBC by coding it, but I don't know if there's enough space in the ROM to code it all since it would be a huge script.

There's plenty of room in the ROM for dynamic level scripts. All you would add to the original trainer script is a check for how many badges you have, then based on that you load one of two parties. Then you'd have add trainer party data for all those trainers. It wouldn't be that big. In fact if you use the Crystal disassembly it should be a breeze to write.

I've done some Crystal hacking. I actually have plans to make a significant Crystal hack if I can get my motivation together.

I remember being so hyped when they found that Johto data in DP basically confirming a remake. That was all i was looking forward to. Then I lost my DS ;-;

So I never played the remakes and stopped competitive battling shortly after i lost my DS so I couldnt even enjoy the new additions to the metagame
