Dude, if you want a rom the latest games you can get are from gen V, Pokemon Black, White, Black 2 or White 2. But seriously, Black and White are lacking on regards of Pokemon (not that there are few but that you will find only gen V pokemon), and Black 2 and White 2 are sequels of Black and White.
OP, play FireRed or LeafGreen for the GBA. That's your best bet to get started and work your way from there. Play Emerald afterwards, then HeartGold or SoulSilver, then Platinum (play Emerald first because otherwise you won't want to go back once you hit the DS games, and Platinum just because it's good; HGSS are the sequels for FRLG so keep that in mind). Once you are done, play Black or White, and then its second version.
