So how does the Pokemon world function exactly?

There are farms here and there but in no way do sustain all the towns you see. Magikarp, Miltank, and berries surely can't be the only thing feeding the people.

How does education work? Do some people just choose to go and be Pokemon trainers for life, others just do it on the side, and others just do it as a coming-of-age thing? There don't seem to be proper schools outside of the Pokemon schools so how are there scientists? Or am I to assume the scientists are self-taught after the whole "We didn't know Pokemon laid eggs" thing in Gen 2 and they train under the current professor, with the professors meeting up every couple months or chatting on their PCs every so often?

How does the Elite Four work? Are they selected after voting, or does the champion get ousted once he gets beaten? Or is the champion after the fourth member constantly rotated out like when Red fought Blue? How is the place kept up? Victory Road seems to be extremely dangerous if your Pokemon faint, or you don't have the strength to make the trek, so do they have people check the place every day for dead people or Pokemon?

Is it a socialist government? People pretty much give you things for free at the drop of a hat, and the only things you pay for are things other people sell you or things from Pokemarts. Who is the prime minister/president/king of the government and where are the headquarters located at? Do they have elections or is there a caste system?

What is the cut-off age for gym leaders? It seems anyone can be one at any age as long as they can fight, as shown by the fifth gym leader of Gen 6. How do you apply to be one, or how do you get selected in the first place? It seems that the kid just took over repairing the tower in Lumiose and just stayed as a gym leader. Is being a gym leader a 24/7 job? What if they get sick or get called out? Is there a substitute they can use to hand out badges? Are they paid to be gym leaders?
