It still bothers me that there's no encounter with the BW1 protag in BW2. There's no reason not to do it or at least tie them into the plot in some capacity with their dragon, especially with the save link.

Of course Yellow IS cannon. Red from G/S/C uses the updated sprite from Yellow, not R/G/B, his team is possible to acquire only in Yellow and he never evolved his Pikachu, because, well, he's from Yellow.

To change the subject a bit from the stupid which game is canon shit, I think it would have been awesome if Red's and Blue's teams were different depending on what starter Pokemon you picked. Red's starter Pokemon would be weaker to your type, so if you picked Cyndaquill, he would have Venasaur. And since Blue is his rival, he would have Charizard.

I don't know what his other Pokemon would be though. Could be interesting to come up with some.

I'd like to see it as Red having the same type starter as you. Just to possibly reflect on the player's possible preferences and to truly link his/her experience in Gen 1 to Gen 2. And that way the rivals would always have the type advantage, while you get an even match with the final boss in the game.

Also I like seeing Red with Snorlax and Gengar, they just seem fitting for him. Lapras as his Water-type too, but I'm not sure what Pokémon he would use for his Fire or Grass types outside of the starters.

The only other fire type I could see besides Charizard is Ninetails. As for grass, maybe Victrebell.

I like his manga team a lot, especially Areodactyl. I always thought was such an out of left field choice for a protagonist Pokemon but that is why I like it even more.

Also, yeah, Snorlax should always be on his team. I like that choice.
