Throwing my Altaria weak team at Winona. It didn't turn out well and I barely scraped through with a Swellow. I didn't lose in the end, but losing 5 mons to her Altaria alone was brutal

Even though I'm probably gonna take a deserved break from this shit, I'm asking an honest question - can you tell me how to make this whole affair less tedious?

It's so immeasurably dull and frustrating after losing a team because of your own ineptitude at a children's game and doing the same song and dance again, engaging in the tedious process of grinding and perhaps watching everything fall apart again.

How can I actually make it enjoyable? Egglockes? Wonderlockes? I dunno.

Keep your pokemon at good health. You never know when a crit could be coming. always be safe than sorry.

Alternatively, you can grind to make sure you can sweep the thing with a breeze.

That just makes it boring for different reasons.

Hell, that was exactly why I restarted my normal run of Y after I beat the game when I first got it, because I realized, albeit belatedly, that the game gives you so many fucking crutches in the form of the Kanto starters, Lucario and formerly Torchic, and the Exp. Share, that it's absolutely ridiculous.

I may be complaining like a little pissant, but where's the fun in destroying everything with 'Mons ten to twenty levels above the opposition?

There was no need to make the mons 20-30 levels above the opposition. A few levels will suffice.
Also, I think you're missing the point of Nuzlockes. It's not meant to be a stress reliever sort of thing, it's supposed to be a thing where you "form bonds" with pokemon you didn't think you would with. Y'know, that one mon that carried you through to the end.

Although the challenge is a part of it as well and it's why you should never risk anything. Safe than sorry

No, I think I understand that well enough.

I question the actual emotional value people claim these have, since the only emotions I've felt during my attempts are frustration and anger primarily directed at myself and not really any sense of joy or triumph, just 'Thank fuck I don't have to do that again', but whatever.

I certainly do want to 'relieve stress', though.

Alright, here's the updated template of my nuzlocke layout. The PSD version contains easily toggleable layers for shadows under the pokemon in the graveyard and box, badges with and without the "greyed out" layer style, and all the Move Color layer styles on empty layers, so that you can easily copy them to the moves you want.

Badges can of course be replaced by ones relevant for your run, just copy the existing layer styles if you want the greyed out look that I'm using.

As an amendment, because I realize that may be taken in a curious way considering previous statements, a challenge without consequences would also be pretty boring, rather.

I mean, speaking hypothetically, yay, I was so 'zen' that I beat a Nuzlocke without losing anybody or making any mistakes and thus rendering the entire premise of a Nuzlocke completely pointless. May as well have just played the game how it's meant to be played.

A Nuzlocke without the death or two of a party member is such in name only. Not that such excuses mistakes, but if you're so careful that you go through the game without anybody dying, why have the run in the first place? So you could feel good about icing Drasna with a Delibird, or something?

Major team overhaul, mostly due to a particularly troublesome ranger on route 13, whose pokémon I had no good counter to.

TotT: On my first Nuzlocke ever, I challenged the Ace Trainer with a Tyrantrum on route 21 while grinding for the Ice gym. The Tyrantrum swept all but one of my pokémon, leaving me with only a Noivern for the gym, so I pretty much gave up at that point.

Wasn't really feeling the Wonderlocke, so I decided to reset and try something I thougt of while trying to sleep last night. Similar to a wonderlocke, but you can only have 6 pokemon total, and when a pokémon dies, you wondertrade it again and use whatever you receive.

This is my starting setup, I'm wondering which eeveelution to go for. Suggestions?

following up from yesterday with my own Wonderlocke:
Manetric and victreebel died almost immediately after I got them up to speed with everyone else. God damn it.
Got some new members, grinding them up for lavarre gym

My Santalune Forest 'capture' was a japanese exeggcute with Synthesis, Giga Drain, Power Swap and Skill Swap, which is pretty nice. Their message was 'Twitch Pokemon', so I was kinda expecting an omanyte or something, but an exeggcute is cool, too.

Do people normally count the Snorlax(es) in FRLG as an encounter, or as an exception? I do want to catch one, but I'm trying to figure if I get a second encounter afterward since it's forced. If so I want to strategize which one I go for.

Personally I tend to allow gifted and scripted encountered Pokemon as well as catching a Pokemon in the route if there is one. But that's just because I'm still really new to Nuzlockes. I think I won't count it anymore starting my next run

Depends on the game. If a game has a lot of gift/script Pokemons in it, then I count them as an encounter. If there's only a few, then I don't.

Also, if the Gift/Scripted Pokemon is in a town, then it always counts. For example, when playing G/S/C or HG/SS, I choose between Bill's Eevee or a Pokemon from the game corner, not both.

Flawless Platinum: A newer 493/difficulty romhack, gym leaders have full teams and most trainers have relatively strong pokemon. It also has revamped/buffed pokemon, moves and movesets.

Caught a Whimsur in Connecting Cave, made the trade, received a Gible. IIRC there won't be any more places to catch pokemon before the Rock gym, so this is what my set up is looking like. Going to train the Gible up to ~18 with the rest and then see what happens.

Since it isn't a nuzlocke, you could just release a pokemon that is out of PP and catch a new one if you don't have any PP filling items
I think it would be kinda cool to have PP be the main problem you are dealing with
And it would discourage grinding since you don't want to waste PP
It also might have an interesting dynamic with abilities like pickup, trying to get leppa berries and stuff

I wonder how hard it would be to make a romhack where PP items are more common, and where you can release pokemon from your party (rather than having to go the PC all the time)

It's up to how you yourself feel, I guess. Personally I include entire evolutionary lines in the dupes clause, and some people apply the dupes clause only if the little pokéball icon is present on the mon you encounter.

HMs

Limiting your team by region is one thing
but forcing yourself to not use certain pokemon you own just so you can have on your team the one that can learn the HM?
This may be an issue

I mean I wouldn't be against the idea of using of my members of the team as an HM whore
but only later down the line when I actually have a decent amount of pokemon I can use

This might need a change in the Region rules
like maybe a MAX2 of pokemon from one region.
That way it would still have limits, but it would actually get me more of a chance of ever seeing a full team

For any challenge involving Wonder Trade I tend to set a maximum level for Pokemon I'll accept. Something like if it is 6 or more levels above the wild pokemon level of the area, I'll re-trade it until I get something lower.

Minimum level though is down to personal preference whether you want to grind up Pokemon from level 1 or not.

sometimes I just let something sit in the box if it's too overleveled. I got a gengar that was level 40 around the second gym, I just boxed it until I reached level 40, then withdrew it.

Man, I've lost interest in this X wonderlocke I'm doing. 3 or 4 party members consistently live, but Those last 2 mons always die immediately after I grind/evolve them. It's getting depressing, my 3 to 4 mons are getting overleveled, my last 2 keep dying, it all feels so pointless. Even more so than a standard Wonderlocke because unlike there, you're WTing for something else every time a 'Mon of yours dies. Even if they're Lv. 1, if they're breeding remnants with great IVs and fitting natures, you've already got a leg up.

So I started my Platinum nuzlocke, made the first couple rounds and have the following team:

Shouma (piplup) lv.6
Beavis (bidoof) lv.2
Ace (Starly) lv.2
Liger Zero (shinx) lv.3

rules:
standard rules, die=boxed, first poke, dupes clause. shiny clause, kill (almost all) legendaries
as for that legend rule, since I consider the lake trio to be on par with relatively strong pokes like alakazam and gengar/etc, I will allow 1 lake trio legend to be caught. Who, dunno, it depends on if I find something before them or not.
revives not allowed no matter what, kill=dead route, standard healing rules.

let the fun begin!
...
after grinding, rather. level 2/3 way too low.

It's actually really interesting, I think this mode should be called an N run or something because it's like I'm keeping a small squad of wilds that I know I will release later
PP is definitely going to be a factor, but I actually really like it, you can't just spam attacks and grind, leveling up and getting a new offensive move is heaven
Potions are low, and I wont get revives for a while, I have plenty of pokeballs so it isn't all bad, but still a lot of pressure to not have to go back to level 4's
Bunnelby (who I hated) has become bro-tier with pickup
I'm still really early, who knows how this will play out, but I'm having fun

Yeah, I've been trying to come up with some additional rule to make it possible to lose. Of course there's the "total party wipe = game over" possibility. And I guess if you keep track of your wondertrade chains somehow, you could limit the amount of "reincarnations" per original pokémon, which would make it possible to eventually run out.

But yes, if you want a tough challenge, the Reincarnationlocke is probably not the best choice.

Your run, your rules. I'd say you have the same basic rules (catch 1 pokemon per map name, gifts/events are your call, KOing or running from the first poke per route disallows trading for a new egg). You could choose to precatch then trade a bunch of eggs at a time so you aren't hurting for it during your lunchbreak or the bus ride home or whatever. Do you have any eggs yet?

Frustrating developments recently. Truffle died while training to a critical Magnitude, so I grinded Chili up alone to deal with Erika. He then died from a critical Razor Leaf from one of the gym trainers (he was slightly low on health, I should have switched, but was not expecting the crit at all).

Not sure what to do. Grind Asparagus up for the gym and hope she doesn't die too? Put Cheese back on the team for now.

Team is mostly settled enough that I can post a non-template MS paint team list.
Mode=Set, EXP Share=Off, healing from KO=Ok

The main reason for fighting was to use pokemon I haven't ever used before (Toxicroak, Medicham, Lucario, and Chesnaught). There are a couple pure fighting types I haven't used either, but I thought going for two-type pokemon would give more diverse movepools.... so far, it hasn't really worked out.
Mostly being carried by Scrafty and Hawlucha, spent more time than its worth raising Brrrrickfrog (Croagunk) before deciding to box him and then spent most of route 13 and the powerplant raising getting Yogi to evolve. Yogi has been pretty disappointing as a special attacker and he may get side retired since Lucario and Poliwrath can kind of mix or go special.

If anyone has a suggestion for fighters to pick up and try on the team, or moves to put on my dudes I'm all ears.

Ok then, grinded tema to 35-37 and took Proton down no losses and made my through the grunts, then had Ariana take out Bogry the Hypno and Blazeit the Cherrim, with Hypno going down to a crit Gunk Shot on the very first turn from her Arbok and had to sacrifice Cherrim to get someone in undamaged to take down her Jynx.

Just grinded Berzerk the Magikarp to 30 for Bounce and evolved it, and grinding him and Babar the Hippopotas to 38 to take on Archer at Safari Zone.

I'm liking the fact that you can choose freely who you catch with your 6 total catches, it makes you very careful with what you catch, so that you don't waste a slot. And the added rule of a limited number of reincarnations definitely removes the feeling of immortality that was present when you could reincarnate ad infinitum.

Picked up my Pokemon Ranger game for the first time in forever, and now I'm thinking of doing a run on a regular game similar to it, but I can't think of how that would go other than the basic rules being keeping one main pokemon and not being able to change it out.

In the Ranger games you only keep the extra pokemon until they use their 'field move' on an obstruction or you enter a town, but I'm not sure how quickly that would get annoying if I did the same in a normal game.

Really don't know what to do here. After Ho-Oh took my water type and ground type, I'm not sure if I should train another water type and Lemonhope at the same time, or just use it for both Surf and Waterfall, and keep Jessie in the party.

The grinding just sucks so much at this part in the game.

Well I decided to push through Rock Tunnel without teaching anyone Flash. It was going extremely smoothly until one of the many Trainer's Geodude's managed to score a Magnitude 8. It wiped out Prim in a single hit. Was pretty devastated, but I pushed through without further incident and made it to Lavender Town.

On the brightside I went out to Route 8 and caught a Growlithe - my favorite Pokemon. Will be a nice addition to the team.

Update on my Reincarnationlocke. I wish there was a way to see the natures of wild pokémon. Phoenix is possibly going to have difficulties when he grows up, and I had planned for Dr. Feel to one day become a Gallade. But nevertheless, the run is going smoothly so far, it is exactly the right challenge level and amount of fear for my pokémon that I want.

I am wondering if I should reduce the reincarnation limit though.

nope. the meaning of a nuzlocke (for me anyways) is fighting with a team that you would never do in a normal run. This makes me feel more connected with the pokémon i catch, as it seems more personal - that i'm not fighting with the team solely based on which pokémon are the best of the best (attackwise or typewise).

Anyone know a good way to play (even a romhack) that basically makes grinding completely unfeasible? I want to get through gym battles with no items and only one alive Pokemon in the red after like five attempts after having carefully calibrated a ridiculous strategy that creatively abuses game mechanics, not just grind a bunch of Pokemon and switch out whenever there's a slight possibility they might die.

Maybe something like "you can only gain experience from mandatory trainers, you can't use items, you have to use SET"?

I got Pokemon Y for christmas, played about 12 hours then I got some real life stuff going on and didn't finish.

I found it too easy and wanted to do something new and more difficult so I looked into the Nuzlocke challenge. However seeing as I haven't completed it yet I kinda wanna do something that isn't too hardcore so that I can actually complete the game without starting over all the time.

Does anyone have any good ideas for specific rule sets that might fit me? I'm thinking of just playing with normal Nuzlocke rules and remove the "black/white out = game over" rule but that seems to be a central rule.

Alright, second gym done, team still intact. As it stands right now, it definitely looks like 10 reincarnations per pokémon is way too many, so I'll probably update the rules and lower the amount of reincarnations later, if it keeps on like this.

I might also restrict catching to only the first pokémon per area, like with a nuzlocke. It's possible that it gets a bit too easy if you can fully control your initial team setup.

If it were me I'd just catch the first pokemon I don't already have from the nearest route (or the first few depending on how much grinding you can put up with) and set them as your new team, box/release the old team and carry on playing

You could try the Reincarnationlocke challenge I'm working on, and help "playtest" it, if you'd like. It's like a nice blend of a Nuzlocke and a Wonderlocke, and not quite as challenging depending on how you set up the optional rules.

Haven't actually gotten to play them myself (though I'll do it eventually), but I've heard they are pretty awesome. And I believe you can transfer from SS/HG to B/W/B2/W2, and from there to X/Y through PokéBank.

Yeah you can trade the Pokemon forward, but only if you have Black, White, White2, Or Black2
