I believe the best ones are Gold and Silver. (I think I can add here Heart Gold and Soul Silver as well.) I still remember how exciting they were when they first came out!

It's weird because G/S are probably only better than B&W in my opinion, but HG/SS are vying for my favorites. Best game mechanics in any Pokemon game along with aesthetics. Damn fine games

I personally really liked Pokémon Sapphire and Ruby. The land and sea elements were incorporated really nicely in the game. I also liked a lot of the new Pokémon that were introduced, too. The other Pokémon games were really good too, though.

My favourite is Platinum (started with gen 1 though) because it has my favourite region, music, and is the most challenging one.

I liked Hoenn a lot too because of the variety of the region, but Sinnoh is still the largest of the 'classic' type of region. As opposed to Unova and Kalos which feel linear and railroaded.

Seriously though I could listen to D/P/Pt's OST all day.

I really dislike HeartGold and SoulSilver but I don't know why. When I'm playing it I just want to go back to the originals.
Though for the record, the Liquid Crystal rom hack of FireRed I extremely enjoyed.

R/S/E are the most enjoyable for repeated playthroughs
HG/SS are the cosiest to come back to and explore/search for rare Pokémon in
B2/W2 are the best as an overall package of difficulty, post-game, expanse, etc.

Colosseum had the best battles
>Miror B. and his Ludicolo
>Ein with his Rain Dance/Lightningrod team
>Evice skill swapping Own Tempo on his Slaking

The only two notably difficult battle sin the main game were Cynthia and Ghetsis, Colosseum is full of them

My first games were RSE. I then played Blue, then Yellow, then Crystal, then Gold.

Started with Blue when it first came out and have played ever gen since. That being said, Soul Silver is my favorite. There's just something about the game. If you take away the scaling issue, it'd be the perfect Pokemon game. For me though, that's not really a problem. I breeze through all Pokemon games regardless of scaling.

I'm still pissed B/W/B2/W2 and X/Y don't have the option of walking Pokemon. Sure, don't force the player to use it, but one of my favorite gimmicks of HG/SS was having my lead Pokemon walking by my side.

The other regions are fine, I just liked Hoenn the most because of the new Pokés and the land Routes. Unlike Johto, I actually felt awed by the new things Gen III brought. Sinnoh was also pretty good in regards of land Routes and new features.

I think part of the fun and challenge in these games is that Double battles are more complicated than Singles.
I wish they would add a Double Battle only mode to the main franchise.

I only started playing Colosseum a few weeks ago, so being a casual can't be it.
The difficulty was probably confounded by the very limited selection of Pokémon you had available (one of my most important team members is Stantler ffs), but regardless.
What I also liked about these battles is not only were they difficult, they actually instilled fear and awe in the player. Discovering that some of Ein's Pokémon had Lightningrod and I couldn't OHKO Pelipper with electric attacks, or how hard his Starmie hit was a shock, and I suddenly had to find a way to win this battle.

I think Heartgold was the first game that when I went back to replay it after playing newer generations, I thought to myself "Still holds amazing."

Also, I stand by my statement that the Pokewalker pack-in was one of the best ideas for a Pokemon game. People were wearing those everywhere without caring because it was practical and fun. I still take it with me to the gym.
