The accepted shortening of "Pokemon" appears to be "mon" or "mons." But I have this weird habit of shortening it to "pokes" unless I catch myself.

Am I retarded?

no, but you /are/ autistic in caring whether you use the more popular term. i've seen "pokes" used a lot, i personally use both, you're fine.

Pokes refers to the Poke in Pokemon which means Pockets.

You're referring to Pokemon as Pockets. Whereas Mons refers to Monsters, as in the MON in PokeMON.

I see both used just as frequently as each other. It's just a case of personal preference.

Though it's kind of funny that fans have taken to shortening a word that was already a shortened version of something else to begin with.
