Just look at the characters from Gen 1.
Giovanni was an awesome evil team leader, Blue was the cooles rival, Lance the most charsimatic E4leader, Professor Oak the most remarkable professor and so on.
In the newer games the characters are far too flashy and exaggerated. E.g. these E4 fags from Gen 6.
The Pokemon were also better at least compared to those from Gen 4 onward. Pokemon were something like more intelligent animals back than, not some fucking gods and creators of time and space. Gen 4 especially overdid it there. Statwise they also got stronger and stronger for no reason and then those uninspired Gen 1 evolutions in gen 4 and the megas in gen 6 appeared.
