They planned Kamon/Silver (I think he was called only in Jap version) to make an appearance as Ash's rival, but after changes in his design they created the new character, Paul. You can see it clearly if you take a look at sketches of D/P episodes.
They (translators) really messed up while translating all these names. I mean Red (second name in games - Satoshi) appeared as Ash, which was correct to translation in games and Green (second name in games - Shigeru) appeared as Gary, which was also correct to translation in games. But Gold (second name in games - Kenta) was Jimmy in anime and his second name in games was Hiro. Silver who appeared only in Japanese intro was known I think as Shinnosuke, which was translated as Kamon as a second name in games. Marina was Kris in English games, but her name stayed as Marina in anime. Weird, isn't it?
After R/G/B/Y/G/S period games stopped using colour names outside of beta/prototype/promotional phase, so anime used first names from games.
