New pokemon games are being made on new hardware, which asks for better standards, which requires more money to accomplish, which means they need to sell more units, which means they need to appeal to people who weren't going to buy the next title.
This isn't a fault of GF or Nintendo, it's the way the cookie crumbles and is true for most series. Just look at what happened to Diablo or Magic the Gathering for two examples.
Now wether you belive the changes are good or not is another matter, but don't delude yourself into thinking big companies are thinking about their established audience.
