I think when he was battling Cynthia, the announcer said she was down to her last Pokemon and it wasn't Garchomp, so Garchomp probably was defeated easily with Darkari's Ice Beam

He's the character the writers pulled out of thin air when they realized ash actually had a pretty fucking solid team but he still needed to lose because they didn't have enough time to do an E4 arc before the Unova episodes were supposed to start.

IIRC there's something about league champions being allowed to enter the champion's tournament which presumably decides who's the Sinnoh champion.
On that level there's likely to be a lot of ridiculously overpowered shit. Lance, Cynthia etc. are always shown to be completely unstoppable.

Imagine how much more exciting the anime would be if it focused on that sort of trainer.
