Tiers.
I see nothing wrong with someone running Phione, mew, etc. So long as they don't break or overcentralize the meta.

Some things need to be tiered out, though, regardless of BST. A good example would be Thundurus.

It's fine. "Legendary" is just a meaningless title when it comes to battles. There are a load of Pokemon that are legendary but far from OP while there are Pokemon that aren't legendary but definitely OP.

I hate Heatran because of its dumb face and great typing/ability but I don't mind using legendaries.

That said, if I were to run my own Showdown server I'd ban them all, because I'd want to make it reasonable to use the same rules on cartridge as on simulator without cheating. On cartridge you don't have the liberty of breeding a perfect Zapdos or whatever.

Its stats and movepool turn into a jack of all trades, but master of none. It suffers from the inability to do something that someone else doesn't do better, as well as a massive case of 4MSS.

But you're guaranteed 3 perfect IVs if you catch it in X/Y. Granted it can't have Heat Wave/Defog, but it's pretty safe to bet they'll be move tutors in Z.

Sure, other Pokemon can do most of what it can do better, but nobody knows what to expect from Mew, unless the trainer in question is using a cookie cutter Smogon set. Its movepool and base 100 stats all across the board make it an unpredictable threat in my opinion.

My problem with legends is that they're judged like any other pokemon competitively and in simulators/damage calcs, with perfect IVs, which is nigh impossible to do in game without hacks, and that discrepancy between what a competitively used legend and any legend you're likely to get legitimately sticks in my craw. You can breed for IVs, more easily than ever now, but the only way to get a legendary worth usibg is soft resetting (potentially A LOT) or genning it, and encouraging the latter or requiring the former both feel like a shitty state of affairs.

It makes it an unpredictable annoyance at best. Its speed isn't sweeper levels, its offense isn't either, and its defenses are decent but not bulky enough to actually do anything of worth. Like I said, it is a jack. It is outclassed in almost every way.

If it is a defensive set, all I have to do is throw out an actual sweeper. If it is an offensive set, all I have to do is use Sucker Punch.

I'm not saying you can't use it, if you can make it work for your team then good on you. But it isn't Ubers tier at all.

I go by Smogon's tiers.

Take Tyranitar-Mega and Garchomp-Mega for example, they're not Legendaries but they have a higher BST than 95% of Legendary Pokémon. And when was the last time you lost your shit and went "Holy tittyfucking Christ on a flagpole, that's OP!" when you were up against Tyranitar or Garchomp?

On simulators, legendaries are fine. Abuse them all you want as you ladder to the top.

But on wi-fi, I feel like it's a dick move to use them. Most of the popular ones (Heatran, Keldeo, Genesect, Terrakion and the genies) are not inherently broken but they are extremely difficult to deal with, and they simply aren't fun to play with or against. It's like playing a game without evasion clause or sleep clause, it's either frustrating or entirely too easy.

On top of that, as someone who doesn't hack their pokemans, it's also a matter of distribution. Hackers get perfect legendaries whereas most players struggle to get a favorable nature.

Mega Mom was banned for an extremely good reason. If you don't think it's uber material there's really no sense in arguing with you.

Talonflame and Aqua Jet are problems for Blaziken but it's still broken beyond reason.

My only problem with legendaries is it's plain horrible trying to get a viable one for your team with good ivs/nature, at least X/Y made it a little easier but there's only a few legendary pokemon in those games. ALSO say I wanna make a team and decide I want to run an old legendary, I either have to go back to an old gen and start a new game to reset for a good pokemon or i'm screwed

Most legendaries are okay, aside from obvious ubers. I cannot think of any reason people would be against the use of any legendaries aside from ones that a clearly ubers. Hell, using legendaries in-game is probably a detriment, since getting ideal IVs is tougher than breeding.

The sole reason Mew is banned in VGC is because it is classified as an "event exclusive" legendary. Nintendo always bans them because they see it as unfair to the individuals that can't make it to the events themselves.

The fact that it uses internet distribution means that I think they should be unbanned, but it could just be a tradition thing now.

Holy shit do you guys really use smogon tiers for everything? I used my waifus substitute/leftovers Froslass and suicidal Abomasnow, or drought Ninetales and substitute/leftovers/clorophyl/quiver dance Lilligant in Black 2, while the other guys used rain teams or Tyranitar+Garchomp, they never complained even when they missed 5 times in a row, one guy even had a ludicolo with rain dance and used that to counter my strategy

I think you misunderstood. I doubt there are many of us who use only OU mons in OU.

Ubers is a banlist and not so much a tier even though it's available as a playable tier. But the Ubers banlist/tier is relevant in a discussion about the legality of Legendary usage.

For fuck's sake, most legendaries are pretty garbage. The only ones that really have any power at the cover legendaries and such with ridiculously high BSTs.

Heatran for example would be a lot better if he WEREN'T a legendary. That would mean it'd actually have access to egg moves and heatran with slack off is not something your anus is prepared for.

The only thing legends have going for them is that they usually have decent BSTs and aren't utterly and pathetically shit on when it comes to abilities... at least... the ones that don't get fucking pressure.

Usually when I play with friends we have a rule that keeps it to one legendary per team to encourage more variety. If I am playing competitively then it's fine based on tiers, you can't go using a mewtwo unless you are playing ubers but it's fine to use some of the weaker ones in the lower tiers. I personally think the legendaries are overused and try to avoid them as much as possible, except for the few I really like.
