There are several different variations on Protect. Kings Shield, Spike Shield, Wide Guard, Quick Guard.

But there is no variations on the move Substitute.

What kinds of moves could you, would you, make, using Substitute as the base?

Dunno about the name. But it'd have negative priority, and would instantly switch out the user, but would give the switch-in Pokemon a Substitute based on the user's HP. It'd make switching in your sweeper a lot easier, but it'd be easily punishable if the other guy decided to stay in and attack.

matryoshka substitute: user faints and creates as many normal subs as is health status can create (1/4 health = one sub) placed inside each other.

They all die by one hit but have to be fought seperately. They also stay on the field, and are not connected to one pokemon only.

1/6th is a weird number but I really like the idea of this, it's basically megakhan parental bond and works even better because the sub doll looks like kangaskid.

Hard Substitute: Uses 1/4 hp to create a substitute with twice the hp used to create it, does not stop status effects.

anyway

Nurse Doll: 1/4 hp. Blocks and cures all status effects, but all damage inflicted to the doll passes right to the pokemon. Heals the subsitute setter 1/16 a turn until broken.

It looks like you switched pokemon until you are hit, but you actually just set up a normal sub. Only zoroark gets this.

Stone Statute: Substitute that leaves stealth rocks on both sides of the field when broken.

Combine these into Trick Bomb. Make a substitute as normal; when it's destroyed, it effectively uses Counter/Metal Burst on the attacker, dealing damage to them slightly greater than that of the hit that broke the sub. Would obviously need to give it much more limited distribution (keep away from the likes of Wigglytuff and Blissey) in order to keep it from being super broken.

Addendum: Perhaps as a caveat to prevent it from being a straight upgrade, it takes more health to create (1/6 hp?) than damage it can soak up (the standard 1/4 hp). Either that or it gives the user some debuff like -defenses or something, but that'd be somewhat insensible in practice with regards to the concept of the move.

I think if the damage was based on how much HP was lost on the fatal hit times 2, it could be interesting. Because (in my mind) it would reward you for throwing out substitutes with less HP in order to get the full effect, as opposed to bulky pokemon throwing out subs, but dealing less damage because it's easier for their subs to tank hits.

uses 1/4 hp to leave behind a grass-type substitute while baton-passing out.

even if grass sucks defensively and it would have to be limited to ninja-like pokes and obvious grass types I think it'd be pretty neat (it also helps protect water/grass/ground weak pokes, of which quite a few are x4 weak)
