Alakazam obviously needs that bulk. Can't have it slowly worn down in eight turns while something stalls out a Pokemon with Psyshock and 175 base SAtk.

I'm not a M-Kazam advocate, but Magic Guard Alakazam wouldn't be taking SR damage and Alakazam would be running Shadow Ball wouldn't it?

Also why is anyone ever using Greninja?

The thing with Mega Alakazam is that it is mostly outclassed by Sash Zam, so there's little reason to use it.
It's not bad but most of the time you're better off just using Alakazam.

Because it's not that great. Even with 197 base SpA (since you can afford to run modest) all of its STABs are relatively low in power and it can't hold an item, meaning it doesn't actually hit as hard as some other special attackers. LO Greninja only hits a few points of damage lower with Hydro Pump and he only has 103 SpA. It also can't compare to nukes like Y-zard or specs keldeo.

It also only does a little bit more damage than its base form with LO, so the only reason you'd want to use it is for Trace (which is a super good ability but is it really worth a mega slot and losing Magic Guard?) and outpseeding a handful of things that normal Alakazam can't.
