Why are there people in the Pokémon universe who don't have Pokémon? How can you live in a world where creatures such as Pokémon exist and not totally want at least one of those?

I don't get those people. I have a friend who doesn't like dogs or cats or any pets and I can't help but think she's a bit of a hollow person for it.

In the pokemon world, though, pokemon are more than pets. Many use their pokemon for their profession. I don't think pokemon are necessary for all professions, but they are certainly helpful for a flipton of them.

I don't really understand the purpose of keeping animals in captivity, unless they provide food.

There's been a few in the anime, but they usually learned the error of their ways by the end of the episode or movie and either had a pokemon or planned to get one by the end.

the kid in the deoxys movie springs to mind

Nah just different folks have different "points" of empathy.

Some people empathize and feel compassion easier towards animals but have a hard time socializing with humans, for instance.
