If you mean FR/LG then expect a decent game that's a lot like Gen 1.

If you mean R/S/E prepare for /vp/'s (voted) top Pokemon game generation.

Prepare for good tropical feels.

Sceptile seems to be a pretty quick and powerful physical attacker
and torchic is beast. Fighting pokemon are good for the first time in these games I think

Pro: It's a cool-looking motherfuck and it's easy as hell to grind through all the water routes.
Con: It gets fucked over by most gyms. It also doesn't learn any good moves until Leaf Blade, so teaching it Bullet Seed is pretty much mandatory.

Pro: Water/Ground is a great type and it anally devastates the entire game. Solid pokemon.
Con: You might find yourself stuck teaching it Surf, Dive, and Waterfall. You'll need another water HM slave or something if you don't want to fuck it over. It's also forced to go mixed and it's pretty damn slow compared to the other two.

Pro: Bulk Up is mad good for it. It's also pretty damn good in-game, make sure you teach it Brick Break, Sky Uppercut a shit.
Con: WATER ROUTES EVERYWHERE. it has an ugly design

Emerald is top notch, I'm replaying it at the moment. Treecko is a good shout for Juan and Wallace, the final gym and champion. Makes it hard in the flying and electric gyms though.

Water/Ground typing through evolution. Easily beats 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th gym. and 2 out of three elite 4 members. Immune to electricity
Awesome move set
Cons:
Gen 3 Swampert Sprite
Le ebin mehmeh
Super weak to grass
>Torchic
Pros
Fire/Fighting Evolution line can easily beat 1st (if you evolve it), 3rd gyms steel/electric types, 5th gym. Decent in the league. Decent all around
Cons:
Fire type in a water route loaded generation. Flying type gym leader, Water type Gym leader, psychic type gym leader
