I don't really play pokemon that much I just got nostalgic over pokemon emerald and figured I should download a ROM just to play through for fun.

Well it's more about cloning items through pokemons holding items (TM's, rare candies etc.)

Can't you just make a safe back-up in some other folder? It shouldn't take a lot of computer knowledge to copy a file somewhere else.
