and

obviously there might be some outliers for specific mons
but that's pretty much the formula; the most variety is within sweepers
utilities will go for Protect +3 status, or possibly 4 status

This may be a stupid question, but what is the point of protect? What does it do for you other than causing the opponent to waste a PP?

Protect has many uses depending on who's using it
Blaziken likes to Protect on turn 1 to get a free Speed Boost, for example (the turn passes and he's safe)
Protect can be used to scout on turn 1 as well, if you think your opponent has a specific move but you want to make sure they'll use it/have it (and when they do you can switch out into something that can take it)
Protect is useful for poison/burn damage, in other words stall
or if you're running doubles, and one teammate needs to avoid collateral damage/scout for moves/wait while their teammate sets up so they can do something together
yeah, it's a very useful move when you're not Protecting just for the sake of prolonging the battle (a turn where nothing happens; if the opponent isn't statused there's no point)
