I don't understand why they decided to introdduce a gender difference for such an iconic pokemon years down the line to be honest.

Also why do females get heart-shaped anatomy differences so often (pikachu, heracross)?

As much as I find Pikachu adorable, I feel that Eevee would have been a better mascot for the series. It better represents different types present in the series but is still cute.

I'm not saying Pikachu was a bad choice, I'm just saying I don't think it was the best.

It's far better mascot than Clefairy would have been. Clefable's nice and all, but a cute yellow mouse that doubles as an electric death machine has appeal to both girls and boys, which probably contributed to a lot of the series's success.

Eevee is one of the most boring designs in pokemon, it wouldn't be recognisable at all. People only remember it for its evolutions, and there weren't even that many at the time. It would be a terrible mascot.
