I never had a rigid classification as to how a sleek fighting hero is supposed to look like, hence I was never bothered with that waist donut of his that is a no-no for quite a few people.
With the right context he can be badass and cute - that always works for me.
At times I kinda wish that Gallade could be retconned to 50/50 ratio to make things easier and to extinguish a good bit of hate he gets every so often, but most of the time I consider this disproportion as something that too has some purpose design wise.
