Look at Butterfree.
What is the major feature of a butterfly? Large, wide wings.
Which is exactly what butterfree has.
Its body resembles nothing like a butterfly. I mean yeah, it has bug eyes and antennae, just to complete the picture of "I'm a bug", but the rest of it it's almost like a human baby body with some wings attached to it.
And yet, you immediately get the message: it's a butterfly.
Major features of a gnat: it's a tiny flying little thing.
Doesn't have wings, there's no explanation anywhere as to why it doesn't, it's not a gnat.
