So I'm going to the Pokemon VGC Nationals in July. It'll be my first tournament and I'm really nervous about it. I have no idea what to run and I'm hardly familiar with Doubles format. The only thing I've planned for a team is a para-flinch Togekiss w/ T-Wave, Air Slash, Nasty Plot, and Dazzling Gleam, and a M-Kanga w/ EQ, Sucker Punch, P-Up Punch, and Return.

Help I have no idea what to expect at Nationals and I don't know what to run. Suggestions?

If this is your first ever tournament, I wouldn't advise you set your expectations very high because the chance of you getting into Worlds from this is very low.
I can't really say for sure what kind of Pokemon to expect to run into at nationals since I haven't been into VGC '14, but I would guess that the majority of Megas, Garchomp, and Talonflame are things every team should be prepared to have an answer to.
There are plenty of resources out there to help you build a team for VGC '14, especially on Nugget Bridge. Some other anons who are more into the scene this year may be able to help as well.
Also, as a side note, the average amount of people at nationals might blow your mind when you first step in the hall.

What the hell happened? I can't imagine attendance was low, VGC in Arlington was always crowded as fuck.

Well, the first suggestion I would have is to remove that Togekiss, it isn't VGC legal for the 2014 format.

Stop posting on 4chan, set up a VGC legal team, go on ranked and fucking play. Play right now.

If you need advice, get it from Nuggetbridge not 4chan. This is a place where people describe pokemon as "OU" as if it's an actual trait that applies outside Smogon.

If you want to see an example of VGC play, there is a youtube channel called "Pokeman Academy". The guy's attacking Ranked Specials with his VGC team and tends to do well.

Now go and actually play, it's the only way to git gud.

My expectations aren't very high anyway. I don't see myself getting into Worlds anyway, I just want to go there and have fun but also do the best I can. I'm definitely expecting Talonflame like >>18557253 pointed out. What megas would I run into most, though? Kanga is obvious.

From my experience, expect Charizard Y, Manectric, and bulky Mawhile, look up Ray Rizzo's spread. Also Charizard X, Mega Tyranitar, and special Lucario see decent use.

TPCi makes weird decisions in terms of event locations. The regional in Utah last year took place in a shitty location and it looks like it's going to be there again this year.

How come? It's possible to get a Togepi in X&Y through the Friend Safari.
VGC's restrictions are really weird. Why restrict all pokemon not able to be caught in X&Y? What's the point of that?

Seems to be a once-a-generation thing where they only allow regional dex pokemon and nothing else. It was the same with B/W in 2011. Still dumb though.

It gives the people who just came in this gen time to catch up.

With the current VGC rules, I was able to go to a tournament and compete equally despite knowing nobody I could trade with and Bank not being out yet.

Yeah, definitely read the articles from Nugget Bridge, and browse the forums as well. Especially the team writeups, you'll learn a lot from seeing how others put together their team.

Showdown also has a VGC ladder for practicing before you spend time hatching a team.
