I'm been playing Pokemon continuously since Red. I've been on /vp/ for a while now, and I spent my time as a smogonfag. That being said, TPP was perhaps the most fun I've had in the series in years. It was an awesome celebration of pokemon, and an interesting look at teamwork and self-imposed goals.
I don't get why /vp/ disliked TPP so vehemently. It was this sort of touchstone moment when the rest of the internet (and even some of the traditional media) were there with us, sharing a hobby and a love for the series.
