This caused him to change his views in order to not end up like his brother. He realized that being a softy bitch and training your Pokemon with love and friendship isn't always the best way of doing things, which is why he treated his Pokemon so harshly when it came to training, but it's obvious he was a nice guy deep inside because he had an arsenal of Pokemon that look up to him and love him. Hell his Torterra, his starter, managed to stay with him even when he realized Paul was becoming a Poke-atheist.
And the fact that he had such a strong group of Pokemon who still loved him enough to stay with him through his harsh training style proved that what he was doing was working and what he was doing was a pleasant alternative to the shit Ash and every other trainer does, hell even Cynthia was impressed with him.
And he was only a douche to Ash because Ash was ignorant at the time and thought his training style was the "Right" one and the only way to do things, to which over the course of DP he finally realized there is no "right" way of doing things. If Paul had been some prancy bitch, Ash wouldn't have ended up like he did at the end of DP, hell I don't even think he would've went so hard against Tobias had Paul not been by his side. Ash's BW journey is a prime example of what would happen if Paul didn't exist and Ash never actually had motivation to train.
