that's really all it has

and really the only mon in the pic should be aurorus because everyone else can run hyper voice or tri attack which flat outdamages hyper beam, except heliolisk but there is no reason ever to run 'normal coverage' and having a shitty stab is not worth wasting a turn. at least aurorus' is ice.

Hyper Beam maims Dragons for Heliolisk, something it can't do without resorting to Focus Blast/Dark Pulse. Some Dragons resist those, and Dark Pulse isn't very strong on a neutral hit. If Heliolisk is facing down, say, Garchomp, and switching out is a bad option, Hyper Beam would do a huge chunk of damage before you lose Heliolisk.

That's just one example. Obviously it's not a good choice for an attack a lot of the time.

heliolisk a shit, and the only dragon that resists dark pulse is hydreigon, while it hits the latis harder than hyper beam. gifting free turns is suboptimal.

No, I disagree. Pyroar gets Hyper Voice. Not only are two Hyper Voices stronger than one Hyper Beam, but Hyper Voice also goes through Substitute.

Pyroar should never run Hyper Beam. I think I've used one enough to know.

Life Orb Hyper Beam on Heliolisk can hit certain Pokemon harder than any of its other moves. Unless your opponent is running SD Garchomp (no one does, unless it's Mega Garchomp; everyone runs Choice Band or Choice Scarf), there are no free turns to give your opponent in the illustration I just gave. Heliolisk will die that turn. Who is going to switch Garchomp in on Heliolisk and then switch out? It's a guarenteed kill for Chomp with basically any attack, and Helio can't do much to Chomp, normally, even with Timid Life Orb. If it's Scarfchomp, you die before you ever hit Hyper Beam, anyway, so what does it matter?

If you ever do want to use Hyper Beam, you have to be reasonably sure that you will die immediately afterwards. Otherwise, yes, you just gave your opponent a free turn and bad stuff happens. The point shouldn't be, "Oh man, I just gotta get this based Hyper Beam off this battle!" No, the pointis that it can function as a pseudo-explosion in very situational circumstances. In most battles, you won't even use it, which is why it's a poor option on anything. My only point is that, yes, it can pay off at times.
