We know that Gold/Silver was gonna be the last games in the series until Pokemon's popularity exploded, letting them make Ruby/Sapphire. So we can guess that the anime was originally set to end there as well.
I'd like to think that the original plan was for Ash to get all 16 badges, march up to the indigo league, beat Lance and become Champion, possibly hooking up with Misty at the same time too, but that Gen 3 forced them to continue the series, so Ash lost, Misty left and was replaced by May, and now Ash travels from region to region with no purpose, constantly losing the big battles, and being oblivious as girl after girl gets ntr'd away from him when they get written off the show.
I wish that the anime producers would have done what I think the original ending might have been, and make R/S reboot the series with Brendon or a Brendon expy as the main character. Give Ash some closure.
