My headcannon was that the point of gyms weren't to win but to teach. Hence why their teams are based on a TM they give you if you win.

This. They'd use different pokemon depending on the trainer's badges. Who in their right mind would only use two monotype pokemon and consider themselves a leader? They aren't supposed to be tough. They 're basically teachers through battle. The badges represent experiences and personal/team development.

Imagine how interesting it would be if you could pick the order of gyms based on this (despite how unreasonable that sounds).

You could take on Wulfric first him having only a Bergmite and Snover. Then take on say Grant last with an Aurorus, Tyrantrum and I guess Carbink for good measure.

Granted this means they would have to forsake HM blockades for something else. Along with 8 lv distributions for each gym per gym.

Dude, the internet is full of traps, and a lot of good traps are right around the age to have grown up on Pokemon.

I was thinking the same thing as well, and it would be great to get rid of HMs, but I think the problem that arises with a game that lets you take on the gym leaders in any order are how you would balance that around wild Pokemon and random trainers.

Isn't this effectively invalidated since you can face some gyms before others in Red and Blue and they don't change their teams?

I think you can fight Surge last if you want.

They're not talking about the games, those teams are obviously set. The "real" pokemon world is what they're talking about.
It doesn't explain why there are never any registered trainers on the entry pillars though. I'd like it if it said the names of people you streetpass, too.
