Why is vaporeon always run with bold? Its spdef is higher than its def. Is it more viable as physically defensive for some reason?

because walls should invest in their weakest defensive stat. vaporeon can already tank special attacks without special def investment, so why not use those evs to patch up its weaker defense stat instead?

Similar example is Chansey, she can take special attacks for days without any investment, therefore by boosting her defense with bold/full def evs makes her much more bulky.

Because it takes neutral damage from most physical attacks and can counter physical attackers better than special attackers so it is more effective as a physical wall.

The approach to defense is different than the approach to special defense, mainly because each side has a type preference.

Pokemon with high special defense more than often take neutral damage from things like boltbeam and Hydro Pump anyways, so they invest in physical defense to handle the U-Turns and Knock Offs. Special walls usually have a way to cripple physical attackers, either via burn or Reflect.

Pokemon with high physical defense more than often have to take super effective moves like Close Combat and Earthquake so they invest in defense anyways. When a special attacker comes in, they either get blown the fuck out or switch to an appropriate answer. There is no burn-type deal for special attacks and almost none of them learn Light Screen

It's because of its type. vaporeon is weak to common special types like grass and electric. but it resists fire and can eat fighting type moves so it usually goes defensive.

Its not about weaker stat with Vaporeon like putting defense in Blissey or Sp. def in Forretress for greater longevity but Vapes water typing which means its weak to common sp. Atk types and neutral or resistant to common Atk types

Vaporeon is invested with Def to become a physical wall, Blissey or Forry get invested in their weaker stats because they die very quick without it.

Would Vaporeon shrug of special moves better if it had full investment in Special Defense? Sure. But what good is that going to do you if some physical poke or mixed wall breaker comes through and kills it no problem?
