I'm currently replaying it and there's literally less than ten good Pokemon that you can take to your team during the first half of the game. Starters, Medicham, Staraptor, Roserade, Gyarados, and that's pretty much it. All the others are either shitmons, have so crappy movesets in D/P that they're dead weight, or are so rare that it's not worth it trying to find one.
