Editing out the overworld isn't that hard if they'd use it in battle against a friend since the entire area is pretty much only blue.

Not very practical to manually edit that overlay out for every single Pokemon, and for every single frame of animation of each Pokemon. A program could not do such a thing.

I agree with the above post, if you think editing out that filter is possible, you probably should just kill yourself.

that has to do with the auto compression used to make the gifs load faster on showdown by making the filesize smaller without human-noticeable quality drop. sometimes the algorithm produces those 'flashing' frames. he 'fixes' them by slightly changing the amount of compression used or making certain color ranges uncompressed etc.

Actually, with Photoshop you can pretty much tell it which parts of the image it should blend or edit out and then just use that same mechanism and apply it to every layer/frame.

It's really impractical but not impossible.

Yeah, I don't know why people think this is impossible. All you have to do is edit 1 by hand, then you can record the steps you took and have Photoshop apply the same actions to an entire folder of images.

I have a theory.

First, you need to understand that GIF files are indexed. This means, each pixel is a reference to an entry in a color table, which in turn is simply a set of up to 256 RGB values. (Pic related, this is the color table for >>18621229 viewed in a GIF editor.)

What this means is that when you edit an entry in the color table, -every- pixel of that color will change. So, my guess is that the GIFs were recorded from the Pokedex, then someone went in and manually looked for the color distortions caused by the polka-dot overlay and changed them to the proper value. Voila, it's like it was never there. All that's left is to optimize the file to get rid of the duplicate entries.

Because the models use cel shading and very little antialiasing, this process shouldn't take more than a minute per GIF. Again, this is just a theory.

I used GraphicConverter, but that's a Mac-only program. If you're using Windows, you can do it with IrfanView. Just open the image and go to Image > Palette > Edit Palette.
