First up, Rock Tunnel. A popular one, but maybe my story was a bit different, but I remember it well.
I went inside Rock Tunnel, first thing, Zubat, no surprise. Poisoned my Pikachu. Naturally when the battle was over and it looked too dark to keep going, I started for the exit-
FLASH!
When you walked a few steps, it'd make a flash to alert you your pokemon was being damaged by poison. I decided that this was the cave's doing, and proceeded to venture onwards, lacking antidote in my bag because they didn't heal HP hue, so obviously worthless.
As I went on, my sick pikachu vomited light everywhere, and when it got low on health I'd just heal it with a potion and keep going. I was excited to explore this place with my new Bulbasaur and Charmander.
Then things got sour. Charmander was the first to go down. Bulbasaur second. My Spearow, who I only kept as backup (the anime taught me they were scary but they looked cooler than Pidgey with their weird ass pink feet, unfortunate that Fearow is one ugly motherfucker) soon fainted afterwards.
So I was down to my Pikachu, who was fighting random trainers, wild pokemon, and poison all off at once... and a really, really undertrained sandshrew, who I didn't dare send out after what happened to poor Bulbasaur and Charmander. So Pikachu in the lead it was.
God I was in there for 2 days, probably a few irl hours but that was so frustrating. Spending all of my potions, watching Pikachu keep fighting (my pikachu > ash's, no contest) and keep losing health so fast.
But then the inevitable came, and Pikachu finally got bide'd to death. And as it passed, so too, did my light in the cave. Now my 7 year old self was alone, his friends all ko'd, lost in the dark (which was/is my biggest fear to this day.
