The only thing about the Gen II remakes that I didn't like was that some of the early game was pretty awkward due to the physical/special changes. For instance, Bellsprout goes through most of its first levels with horrible attack and only vine whip and Growth as its two moves back then growth only raised SpAtk, not both. Also, I seem to remember something similar with Mareep and Spark. After getting past the first few parts, though, the rest of the game was fine.
