Fly is useful in game actually. 90 base power is excellent in gen 1, and the charge turn doesn't matter since you opponent doesn't switch.

Psychic wasn't weak to Ghost due to a programming fuck up (and even then, lol Lick), leaving it only weak to Bug (LOL Pin Missile).

Half the reason they introduced Dark and Steel in gen2 was to counter how massively OP Psychics were.

Scyther had a really cool design but only one stab move, wing attack which had 35 base power in gen 1. Game Freak really fucked that one up.

A lot of people used Pin Missile Jolteon too as a 'counter'. It was the most broken a type has ever been.

I love how all the strategy guides suggested Haunter/Gengar were the answer to Psychics

this team served me fairly well, paralysis and crits let me beat the shit out of a lot of things and my inner contrarian hipster bastard made me refuse to use any psychics in my team. It's the same thing that made me pick Charmander, come to think about it - everyone in my school went for bulbasaur or squirtle.
