It's possible to make a successful team with zero OU things, but you'll probably have to do something like a rain team. With a rain team you can get a high rating and only have one, two or even zero OU stuff in your team. But at any rate, don't actively avoid using good pokemon.
After that, just learn how to predict stuff. Only try to do this at a decently high ranking though, because terrible players do stupid and simply unpredictable stuff most of the time.
