Some people on /vp/ hate Smogon for whatever reasons. That's okay - everyone is entitled to an opinion. What I'd like to know is this: what would you do to fix it, or what alternative would you put in its place, if you had the power to do that?

Erase the fanbase. Seriously, what makes Smogon so hated are all the smogonbabies who only uses what smogon recomends and cry if you beat them with no-OU teams.

Install boxing gloves to everybody's PC and have Smogon members be punched every time they imply that having read an article that tells them which Pokémon to use makes them personally good players.

There are good players on Smogon, but they're vastly outnumbered by people who try and emulate the good players, fail, and brag anyway.

Also what's with all the anti-Smogon threads right now? Pretty sure there are three on the frontpage, usually there's only one active at a time.

No one who complains about Smogon actually knows how it works, so they have no idea how to fix it or make a better system

Every time someone bitches about how they should make their own meta they can't figure out any other way to determine what is/isn't broken without copying what Smogon does (hence why Pokemon Online has incredibly similar tiers)

And then it never goes anywhere because /vp/ is good at complaining about shit and nothing else

Personally, I would want to see Smogon's model adapted for other game modes. Imagine a "UU" MtG, where shit like Defender Ramp is viable, or 5 color Gate decks work.

You can easily play a Maze'z End deck in standard though. It ain't even that bad. Play the defender of the heaths/riot control, x4 sphinx, that new blue green planeswalker, some of those gate creatures (green/white ones), board some rakdos returns... It isn't as bad as you'd think.

Exactly. That is why we need to make the tier LU (Luvdisc used), species clause is suspended and allowed pokemon are National Dex #370, Hoenn Dex #183 and Kalos Coastal Dex #029 In case it wasn't obvious, all 3 are luvdisc. Why did you have to read that anyway?

I am debating whether running Modest to give a chance of the 2HKO on Luvdisc (252+ SpA Luvdisc Hidden Power Grass vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Luvdisc: 102-122 (44.9 - 53.7%) -- 34.8% chance to 2HKO) is worth running the risk of being outsped by Timid scarfed Luvdisc. What do you guys think? Should I HP creep to avoid 2HKOs from other modest 252Ap.Atk Luvdiscs?

interesting question: how good smogon can be as a guideance if you are not playing by their clauses? the suggested sets are build towards their own meta with all the clauses. Playing on non-smogon-rules you will eventually find those sets smogon banned which rend useless their advice.

I mean, its ok using the site as a way to get some knowledge on trends and ideas but because all the differences in their "balancing the game," you are bound to play by their rules and going their way or ignore them completely to avoid getting rekt. There's few space in-between

Rest be broke
No mon can have Sub + Aqua Ring on the same Moveset.

Once I had this idea of a game ladder where both players takes turns banning pokemon (Maybe six pokemon each). Afterward, they start building their teams and battle each other with these teams. And of course, they can't build their teams using pokemon any of them has banned.

I realized it wouldn't work at all, so I scrapped the idea.

The people complaining are the problem. As are the those in the smogon forums who belittle those who don't play by their rules. The answer is simple: play the game however you want and don't force your play style onto someone else. If someone wants to use Smogons tiers and rules and you don't like that, don't play with them. Or if they're a friend you want to battle against, maybe meet them half way. Same thing goes in the opposite direction. People just need to grow up and stop starting flame wars. Thats all I have to say about it.

The bans could be raised to 10 instead of the usual 5 or something.

There will be some powerful pokemon picked of course, but at least you can ban specific pokemon you don't want to fight for whatever reason.

Some will, but that's part of the fun. You can't ban everything, but you can't pick them all either.

Besides, there might be a much larger pool of actual mons, but the pool of viable ones is still only really in the ~200 ballpark, and you could always have more bans.

How about this. Both players bring 12 Pokemon names, through them in a big pile and do the ban/pick thing.

Duplicate Pokemon would cancel each other out. So, if we both bring a Machamp, Drudiggon and Ferrothorn, only one of those would be available to be picked.

I think maybe shoving more bans in somewhere might work, but to be honest we can't know without playtesting and I don't have any knowledge to create a web tool that would let you do the picking/banning, because I know Showdown won't support it.

This luvdisk set works great.
It can start up with RD to turn your entire team good. Then drop a toxic and spam bounce until the enemy faints.Aqua ring is for extra healing on a turn where no other option can be used.
Any thoughts?

There is one issue with that set. You are playing Rain Dance for the Swift Swim boost, correct? Considering that Hydration isn't available yet (and would be ridiculous given how stally the meta already can get) you are running Rain Dance for Swift Swim. Here is your problem. The other team? All Swift Swim Luvdisc.

Could be useful supporting Dive, Aqua Jet and Water Pulse though. Also, to the anon who suggested Hidden Power Electric over Hidden Power Grass earlier, seems that Luvdisc can get Mud Sport, so that is not a good option.

They have extremely high stats in comparison to most unevolved Pokemon because they weren't originally intended to stay unevolved. Sneasel is especially nasty; its attack is high, it outspeeds every other Pokemon in the tier, and its Ice and Dark stabs blow up some of the other "unevolved" Pokemon, forcing the tier to be Sneasel and anti-Sneasel.
