In MY personal headcanon, I feel like they could have a good battle against a legendary, but that they would likely end up losing. I've always felt like they take legendaries way too fucking lightly, especially in the games. They mean fuck all.

Bear in mind that, in origins, they were sticking strictly to source material. Basically all that happened there, happened because it could happen in the game.
It's not the same canon as the anime. As >>18664672 said, it's still yet to be seen.

If we go by the anime, normal mons like Charizard are capable of going toe-to-toe with the lower end Legendaries like Articuno. Mega Evolved would be a step up.

If we go by The Origin Mega Evolved mons would spank any Legendaries including Mewtwo.

And that's about it for comparisons!

When I think of Megas, I see them as being in some sort of hyperactive battle-mode, as in they can't just sit around and do nothing once they've gone mega,similar to going Super-Saiyan

I feel like so much energy and raw power comes out of any Mega pokemon, enough to go toe-on-toe with any legend bar Arceus. They'd be pretty evenly matched, as in, I could easily see M-Tyranitar having a destructive, all-out battle to the death with a Groudon, and nobody would really be able to just guess the outcome at first, they'd be fighting equals.

Something I've never liked about how they depict pokemon is that it doesn't really match their descriptions and legends appropriately.
I mean how do you even get a chance to fight Arceus, let alone win or even get to do anything, if theoretically it could just destroy the universe and then recreate it as an exact copy in which everything is as it was, except you don't exist?

I try to take it all with a grain of salt. I'm sure Arceus is powerful, but in the end, it's still just an animal, albeit a magical one. Kind of like how bunches of legends irl say salamanders can live in fire, when anybody that knows anything about animals knows that's definitely not even close to being true.

Having said that all Pokemon with mega evolutions should be as powerful as some legendaries.

Even the Abrahamic God had to rest after creating the Earth. Arceus can't just do that shit on a whim, creation takes some dedication. Blowing it all up to get rid of one kid who just wants to go on adventures with you for his brief lifespan (or as long as you choose to allow it) would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You realize about 60% of legendaries are weaker than every pseudo, right? "Legendary" is a very weak catch-all term because they vary pretty wildly. Trios are all 580 BST and thus only slightly stronger than a good starter Pokemon. Version mascots tend to sit a fair amount higher and are about as strong as your average Mega. Then there are the uber strong fuckers like Mewtwo and Arceus who are 700+ BST which no one could ever beat, and they're meant to be that way.
