Not everyone who becomes a type rep is necessarily wanting to be a Gym Leader. So, for example, even if Fire type is the absolute strongest type, but the Fire type rep doesn't want to be a Leader, we end up without a Fire Gym, and the next type down the list gets a Gym.
So we won't always end up with the 8 strongest types, but we WILL always end up with the 8 strongest trainers of their own type.
And that's ok. This is, afterall, primarily a mono-type tournament for the sake of having a fun mono-type tournament. I don't think we should, say... sub in the next best Fire trainer for the sake of having a Fire Gym.
But consider the difference this implies. For example, in season 1, our Fire rep was a very strong trainer, secured a very high spot in the top 8, but in the end dropped out and didn't become a Gym Leader, being replaced by the next rep down on the list. Does this make the Gym Challenge weaker as a whole? Granted, each trainer who secures a type rep spot is a very strong trainer indeed. But not all types are created equal, and replacing a top tier type with one that might not be as challenging shouldn't be brushed over without a bit of discussion.
Do you guys think this is a non-issue, or do you think missing out on top tier type Gyms is something that should be looked at further?
I don't want to be too presumptuous at all, but imagine if 5 of a previous season's Gym Leaders secured type rep again. And the Gym Challenge misses out on 5 of the top Gym types because they prefer not to be Gym Leader again. But perhaps this is actually healthier for the Gym Challenge, to cycle in fresh new types into the Gym Challenge that challengers did not get to face last time?

I think we hit a great sweet spot with the difficulty of last season's Gym Challenge. Seven people were able to make it through all 8 Gyms and become Champ. We weren't a breeze with everyone blowing through us and becoming Champ, and we weren't an impassable wall, halting all challengers and all fun. This, the difficulty level of the challenge, was a great concern of mine and the other leaders when shaping season 1's Gym Challenge. I'm glad our ideas, the way we formed the challenge, the rules we put in place, like no switching Pokes, the restrictions on broken Pokes and legends, and later the 3-strike-you're-out rule (and of course our own individual strengths as trainers and synergy amongst the Gyms) allowed us to hit that sweet spot of difficulty. I hope future Gym Leaders put as much consideration into maintaining that sweet spot of difficulty for the challenge.

I knew Tuna would have been stronger than me as a gym leader. Dragon has those huge raw stats, the big BP STABs, excellent coverage... Normal gets no SE hits and really struggles against certain "blind spots."
But look, all the people who made it to the final 18 were excellent trainers, regardless of what type they picked. Okay, so some types have more weaknesses and bigger blind spots than others. So what? What would you even say are the weakest 8 types? And don't forget that some types cover each other well, so an Electric Gym benefits a Fire Gym, and yadda yadda.
Now if we get a Steel, Electric, Fire, Rock, and Poison Gym, well... that's Earthquake: the metagame. That would kinda make it unbalanced. But there are 3 other types, still, and most of those types have several good Pokemon that can avoid Ground damage. We all would find a way to get by.
Really, I don't see what all the hullabaloo is about. Nothing to worry/complain about until we know who/what the gyms are.

And after all, we're not going for the ultimate difficult Gym Challenge, we're trying to make the most fun Gym Challenge, and at the same time, trying to hit a sweet spot in the level of difficulty.
So with your input, I'm seeing more along the lines that the earlier concerns are really a non-issue. We end up with great trainers of diverse types that hopefully come together to make for a very fun challenge. I suppose there is no benefit we could gain from poking at it, or trying to artificially alter it, especially before even seeing the Gym Challenge start to unfold.
