Update for the War-Themed Nuzlocke of Ruby, or Warlocke 3: Hoenn Mercenaries.

It seems like I managed to gather a pretty solid Troop and we've started doing some work. The Zigzagoon brothers Boomer and Joker have provided us with more supplies than I know what to do with. I don't know where they get it from but I'm not going to question them.

Finding work in Hoenn was easier than I thought. The minute I set me foot in Rustboro City the biggest company in Hoenn, Devon Corporation hired us for some... On hand business strategy. We've been tasked with taking out supplier for their competition, protected by heavily armed forced. I know better than to question my employers, so all I know is that these people need to go.

Our first target was Roxanne in Rustboro, running a mineral extraction point in the middle of the city. The Troop easily took her and her business down. She never knew what hit her.

Next on the list was Brawly, manufacturing and distributing body enhancing chemicals in his gym that was a front for the lab. With a surprise aerial assault from Goose he was also taken down.

We still have a long road ahead of us, and as long as the money keeps rolling in to our account this journey is far from over.

Just lost my Excadrill. This particular slot on my team seems to be cursed with wildly flip-flopping luck.

Elekid: Killed by wild Pinsir who I captured

And now I face a choice of what to replace her with, and the front runner is a Trapinch. Am I cursed to an endless chain of recruiting the one who killed my last guy for the 6th slot?

Are you using Desmume?
It runs better if you turn on the Advanced Bus Level Timing and use the Dynamic Recompiler. They're in the emulation settings.

jokes aside, I'm back, made an update cause I figured I wouldn't run into a gym leader blind again after what happened with bugsy.
Does my team look alright from here? What levels are morty's pokemon? And lastly, is there anything in my PC more suited to fighting Morty?

anyway, now that Morty is down I'm gonna reshape my team a little bit. Next is a fighting gym, and I want to minimize my death toll, so I'm gonna store glaceon (as much as it pains me) and Brickface away, in exchange for getting back my old buddy speedrun and a new addition, rex. ALso replaced Beautifly with scyther for more variety. Also Scizor is a BAMF.

bulky pokes are a godsend in Nuzlockes and provided phys/spec split hasn't been implemented, Cruel should be able to get something out of his Adamant nature with STAB Poison attacks all being calc'd with the Attack stat.

I'm running through Plat right now and it's been one of the more rewarding Nuzlockes I've played. It's a semi-blind run and it's the perfect difficulty.

I got wiped twice before the first gym, then on my third try I really buckled down and started caring about my team so I could protect them.
It's fun.

Kecleon has a decent nature and is really nice and bulky already
I know it can also learn a handful of special attacks like Flamethrower to circumvent the Bold penalty to Attack.
Also it learns strength and is cuter than Forretress

I'm not familiar with Eccentric Emerald but ROM hacks are a blast to Nuzlocke.
I think it's because of the variety of wild Pokemon. Makes for some really diverse interesting teams.

I was considering infector (grimer) but then that psychic weakness in my team will grow and especially with Sabrina coming up. Kecleon might work.

So, question for someone just beginning his first Nuzlocke on Ruby or FireRed. Does the whole "first Pokemon in each area" thing not count until you get Pokeballs? So like if I'm going from city to city doing an errand or something for Oak, and I meet a Pidgey, I am not allowed to catch any other Pokemon I meet because I already saw one?

Beat Rival, Caught an Oddish on Route 24 and an Abra on Route 25 (lucky catch!), Got SS Anne Ticket, beat Misty. This is much smoother than any previous attempt I've made. It's kind of nice.

I'd like to add the Abra I caught to my current team, not sure who I should replace though. Kind of a tough choice.

Some people are strict and the first mon they see is the first mon they see. If they have no Pokeballs at the time they skip the route.
I think when most people play with dupes clause, they only skip the first x repeated encounters, and then if they encounter another Pokemon they've already caught they catch it or skip the route.

I appreciate those moments so much more in Nuzlockes. I was lucky enough to find a Machop in Plat that I could trade for an Abra. His stats are static because he's a trade mon and his IVs/nature are pretty solid. He's in my PC now but he fucked shit up when I had him on my team.
Teach him Grass Knot and he'll be your best Grass type :')

I'm tempted to add in the Fighting type because Blaziken is part Fighting, but the Pokemon has to be only Fighting type. Is that cheating?

In what way? You need to open it in Photoshop or GIMP, but if you're using GIMP the layer styles for the moves won't work (though you can recreate something fairly similar if you wanted).

I tried to organize and name the layers as best I could. For the party pokémon images, I made this small tutorial. As for the graveyard/boxed pics, just paste them inside the Pictures > Graveyard/Boxed folders, and optionally activate the matching layers in the Shadows subfolder.

My current team in Sacred Gold. I also have a level 30 Beautifly in the daycare named Silver. Caught it at level 25 as a Silcoon but it only won me second place hence the name. Simba just wiped the floor with Morty so I'm feeling confident. I have Route 38 coming so I wonder what my catch will be.

Didn't have a lot of time to play the last couple days and I didn't want to spend all the time grinding up the two new guys until yesterday.

Skyla was only slightly more scary than I imagined. Branches and Stella didn't make an appearance during the fight because I felt they were too weak to her core team, and I was tired of waiting so Narnia held the EXP share and held the furthest of the back lines.

Brahsmosis set up a light screen and switched out while her swoobat spent some time forgetting who he was with amnesia. Terroir switched in and took out Swoobat and Unfezeant without any problems and minimal damage. Have I mentioned how much Stoutland has surprised me? Solid body + intimidate is nothing but good times. Anyway, thats when her fucking Swanna showed up. The bird started the fight with an Aquaring and Terroir gets critical crunch but doesn't get the kill. She throws her first hyperpotion and I crunch again hoping for either another crit or a def drop. I get neither. Swanna then locks Terroir down by flinching me until he gets his HP back up near 100%, takes one hit and pretty much does it again. I spray a potion on the pup and then take a crit which is only slightly more than the super potion healed back, but still makes me feel like I have a clock on the match. After being fucked hard and raw, I decide the hax has to end one way or another and think about the risk of switching in Sumoppet or if I should bring him in clean after a sacrifice. I went with the risk, and he cleaned up with a Body Slam with paralysis, and then a couple more turns to clean up.

Twist mountain went well, caught a Boldore which doesn't really excite me. Brycen was rolled by Sumoppet. Might check out the other catches in the area or I might head to bed.

Not great, got wiped by Elesa in my VW2 Fighting monolocke, Emolga outsped and paralyzed half my team and then Zebstrika cleaned the rest up with Bounce.

But started a nuzlocke on it again and just had a Jolly Ralts as my catch from route 20, so I'm hoping this run will be good.

After a long training session outside of Slateport, our hero Cyrus traveled back to Dewford City to face off with Brawly, Hoenn master of Fighting Pokemon!

Brawly's Machop faced off against Cyrus's Makuhita, Babe. Two Bulk Ups in a row gave Babe the health advantage, but a Super Potion and two Karate Chops later put Babe on the ropes. With Babe in danger of dying, and with no time to perform a Super Potion, Cyrus switched in for Richard, his Combusken.

Richard knuckled down and, after three quick Pecks, Brawly's Machop bit the dust. Out came Brawly's own Makuhita, four levels younger than Babe but somehow quite intimidating. Richard fought with Ember and Peck, and Brawly's Makuhita retaliated with Bulk Up. Brawly managed to use his second Super Potion to keep his Makuhita in the game, but Richard was just too fast. Another Ember later, Makuhita was down for the count.

To celebrate his victory over Brawly, Cyrus asked Mr. Briney to sail back to Slateport. Once there, he traveled to the Trick House where he met the Trick Master. Traveling through the house was a breeze thanks to Richard's Cut, and for his efforts, Cyrus earned one Rare Candy.

Coming up soon: Cyrus prepares to take on Wattson, the cheerfully electrifying man! But will Richard and Babe be able to combat this new challenge? And what is Babe about to do that is so shocking it might raise the team to new heights?

Not updated in a while but here it is. I have 6 badges just got to Anistar City. I had a long period of play between the third and sixth gym without losing a single pokemon, which I'm quite proud of.

The biggest suprise of the run so far is Wiz the Beedrill, who I really didn't expect to make it this far. He's the Fairy Killer of the run, I hope I can get him to the Hall of Fame..

I'm thinking Jolteon gets too narrow of a movepool, so probably Espeon. Just be careful during the Morty fight and he should be fine. But its your call. Their HP and defensive stats are the same, so the choice should be to shore up your coverage. You could wait and make it a vaporeon later if totogator doesn't make it.

Pincushion if its Jolteon, Chen for an Espeon, or Corydoras if you decide on Vaporeon.

I think this is my first loss I've ever felt like I've been reeling from.

I cheated a little to get Tidbit the Drilbur on my team. I had dreams for Burr the Ferroseed.
I had Anollo the Scraggy a damn long time, but he didn't carry me through six gyms. Those were nothing but lost dreams. Sumoppet was a pillar of our team. His tenacity, one might call it sassiness, brought our spirits up even when we were grounded by Skyla's flinch hacksand shocked into paralysis by Elesa. He wouldn't be slowed by Clay's bulldozer or the ice in Brycen's heart. But thats all gone now because of a critical Leaf Blade from Bianca's coiled Serperior.

I think have all my pre-Iris captures finished (victory road is probably the only other place I can get to before the E4) and I'm not sure who else to put on my team. Right now I have Golett on standby but I'm open to suggestions.

Fire'll help against Pryce and Jasmine. Assuming you're playing vanilla HGSS, though, that Vulpix is gonna stay that way until Kanto. Eevee's also gonna be forced to go either Espeon or Umbreon unless you're willing to wait till Kanto.

The only Ghost move I have on Gastly is Night Shade, but that's based on Level. I know Morty is packing Shadow Ball, so I guess it's a matter of if I want to grind Gastly to the point where he evolves and is strong enough to throw Shadow Balls of his own and not die or not. I think I might just rely on Pursuit and Bite for now.

Continuing on with his journey, Cyrus took the foot path from Slateport to Mauville City. On the way, he met his rival, May. Regrettably, May was not as strong as her rival Cyrus, and he easily took apart her team with Ember on Shroomish and Vital Throw on Marshtomp.

In a battle against a Psychic just before Mauville, Babe saw his inner power and evolved into Hariyama! His bulk increased and he quickly became the MVP of the duo.

In Mauville City, Cyrus obtained a Mach Bike from Ryder and took it all the way back to Slateport so he could hunt for a Geodude for Rock Smash fodder. Realizing this was against the rules, after he was already at Slateport, Cyrus went through all of Granite Cave to obtain all of the miscellaneous items. He then taught Rock Smash to Babe after obtaining the HM from the guy in Mauville City.

Cyrus steeled himself for the battle against Wattson. It would be the toughest battle he had faced yet, but after doing some grinding, Cyrus was ready. He easily swept through the gym trainers with Babe and Richard at the helm.

The battle began! Cyrus sent out Babe, the Hariyama, to combat Wattson's Magnemite. A single Rock Smash almost knocked out Magnemite, who got out a Thunder Wave that turn. Paralyzed, Babe had to sit through a single Thundershock before retaliating with another Rock Smash to finish the Pokemon off.

Voltorb was sent out next, and he used Charge in order to prep for Spark next turn. Cyrus called out for Vital Throw, and Babe worked through his Paralysis for a clean knock out.

Magneton was coming up and Babe was still Paralyzed. Rather than risk something incredibly stupid happening, Cyrus called Richard out to battle. An Ember right off the bat put Magneton in the red, and added a burn on top of that. Magneton got out a Shock Wave on Richard, and to finish the match, Richard fired off another Ember.

Wattson gave Cyrus the Dynamo badge for winning. What is to come next for our heroes?

After making our way through Team Plasma's ship and having some very near-misses against Colress, I'd been thinking I would pull a fast one on Ghestis and Masterball his precious dragon god... only for him to use his magic sword to disable captures. Not exactly a plot twist I expected.

As I looked up White Kyurem, I realized I had no good way to beating him. My Samurott had jack shit in the way of special defense and White Kyurem gets a huge boost to Special Attack, so going for a powered-up Revenge would almost certainly result in suicide, and the dragon/ice typing screwed any hopes of a 2HKO from Ice Beam, Surf or Aqua Tail. Liepard, Galvantula and Zoroark, despite their massive attacking power, had no Super Effective moves in their arsenal for an Ice Dragon, which meant there was no hope for a 1HKO, and they'd never survive a hit from Fusion Flare if he went for that instead of Ice Burn. Garbodor was underleveled and I couldn't depend on him being able to survive long enough to build up Stockpiles and wall for 8-10 turns while Toxic did it's job when he was taking on a level 55.

But Durendal had a chance. It was a small chance. But without STAB to support it she might being able to tank Fusion Flare despite it's super effective status with her incredible Special Defense. This meant she was guaranteed two attacks, either by surviving Fusion Flare or because of Ice Burn's charge turn. The only question was if Sacred Sword could do the job.

She was tired of everyone not shutting up about Reshiram and Zekrom being the only things that could possibly stop Kyurem. She tied on her Expert Belt and vowed to prove to them all what a "lesser legendary," can do.

She was so close... just one little sliver of HP... if only it had been Black Kyurem, her special bulk could have surely weathered Freeze Shock...

Liepard finished the job with Fake Out, but it was a hell of a bitter victory

Gogoat luckily has earthquake, giving a secondary typing advantage against fire and steel

Lost my Pikachu to a random Spearow's Fury Swipes while trying to level up a bit. Really bummed me out. Replaced him with a Voltorb which was kind of shitty, and was taken out by a Trainer Rattata's Hyper Fang in Rock Tunnel. Made it through Rock Tunnel and managed to catch a Growlithe, which is pretty exciting. Finally have a fire type.

Personally I'd take Vaporeon because bulk is absolutely vital in nuzlockes but if you want to make better use of that nature go with Jolteon (or Espeon if you're playing a hack that lets you).
