Also, Glalie was an obscure Pokemon with terribad competitive viability while Gardevoir has always been beloved.
Slipping a familiar design into a popular line guaranteed that Gallade would get a vibrant, elaborate fandom in an instant... but also a vocal hatedom of people who felt uncomfortable with a 'sexist brute disguised as a Gardevoir in pants' finding his way into their fold.
If Gallade were to be introduced as a - I don't know.... - a geometrized floaty head that shoots swords, I suppose that there would be next to no controversy regarding such an addition.
