Gen 1: people say gen one had the worst bug types, but I still found this game to be not bad, if only you could horribly abuse sleep. Scyther wasn't incredible no, but he could also abuse crits with slash.
Gen 2: another relatively simple gen. Heracross/forretress/pinsir are good, even ledian wasn't the worst because of good coverage elemental punches coming off of his special attack stat. It went smoothly until you become almost hard walled by charizards and aerodactyls late game.
Gen 3: definitely the hardest game to monotype bug run. I actually think this game had the worst bug types, at least in game. Armaldo is great, but most of his good moves require TMs/breeding. shedinja was okay, you can kind of exploit dumb AI if you get good with him, and in emerald he sweeps half of the champion's team.
Gen 4:not the greatest bug types to choose from, but still had some of my favorites. Soloing kricketune until you get honey trees is suffering, but then you get kickass heracross and vespiquen. Yanmega is also my favorite of all bug types
Gen 5: the easiest, nuff said. Crustle/volcarona could solo the elite 4, and galvantula/scolipede/others provided fantastic support
Gen 6: Vivillon was great, but I was sad that it was the only new bug type. Still pretty easy run because of abusing vivillon's compound eyes and crustle's shell smash.
