Pre-evo runs are what I've strictly done ever since generation four. Makes the game far harder, plus you can then just breed perfect evos post-game. This is especially better in X/Y now with exclusive post-game hidden abilities, it just feels redundant raising up a Greninja, Chesnaut or Furry Fox starter without the hidden abilities.
As for your team OP, go with your heart. Your bros will find you. Makuhita is a gr8 choice.
