Slowly and towards the end it will be absolutely awful
People will lose interest because something else will become big and cause a decrease in sales and Gamefreak will introduce stupid shit that nobody likes in an attempt to reclaim the market

Then, a decade later, nostalgia will kick in and the series will rise again

It never will, because nothing ever loses popularity in Japan. They have no concept of something becoming old and tired. Our culture already decided Pokemon has worn out it's welcome more than a decade ago. And no, nobody cares what kids think because kids have not developed taste and they are fickle. I guarantee you app games are more popular if not COD or some other franchise based purely on toys.

Trust me, no other franchise caused the fall of pokemon. It was mostly the original fanbase thinking they got too old for it, and that the anime grew stale. (face it, it was the main driving force of the original fandom)
